About The Position

Brock University is seeking Education Instructors - Practicum Advisors for the Practicum for Professional Collaborative Communities I (PJ and JI) course within the Department of Educational Studies, Teacher Education program. This role involves mentoring teacher candidates (TCs) during their field placements, assessing their readiness for the profession through a log of professional practice and ongoing communication, and collaborating with associate teachers (ATs). The position requires adherence to Brock University policies, completion of mandatory online tutorials and training, and effective use of a provided Brock email address for all communications. Advisors will collaborate with co-advisors, manage instructional time, adapt strategies for diverse learning needs, and provide feedback aligned with professional standards. The role also involves working collegially with other instructors and program leads, mentoring TCs with reference to the Teacher Education Practicum Handbook, and liaising with ATs and principals as needed. The instructor will monitor progress, assess TCs, and submit final grades by deadlines.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of recent (last five years) teaching/school experience; specifically in the area of mentoring new teachers and/or teacher candidates.
  • A master's degree or research related experience.
  • Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers.
  • Must be in good standing with the OCT at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education.
  • Exhibits contemporary knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy including assessment.
  • Knowledge about social justice and equity through anti-racist and anti-oppressive lenses.
  • Experience facilitating challenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners.
  • Experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners.
  • Competency in using educational technology and platforms for content creation, course management and delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor teacher candidates (TCs) during their field placements using a log of professional practice, in alignment with materials covered in 8P01.
  • Assess TCs readiness for the profession using provided documents and ongoing communication, including online meetings.
  • Work with associate teachers (ATs) and respond to their correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Become familiar with and adhere to Brock University policies.
  • Complete required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to the first class.
  • Complete required Gender and Sexual Violence supports for teacher candidates training.
  • Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications.
  • Collaborate and co-plan with co-advisor.
  • Effectively deliver all aspects of the course, including using online platforms and virtual meetings for communication.
  • Manage instructional contact time and non-contact time according to the requirements outlined in the practicum advisor requirements and Log of Teaching Practice.
  • Adapt instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs, including liaising with Student Accessibility Services as required.
  • Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to course concepts/content and Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT.
  • Work collegially and collaboratively with other team instructors, course team lead(s) including attending team meetings and debriefings.
  • Mentor teacher candidates for practicum placements (P/J/I/) with reference to the Teacher Education Practicum Handbook.
  • Coach/mentor teacher candidates and work with associate teachers.
  • Liaise with associate teachers and principals when needed.
  • Respond to associate teacher’s correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Participate, as warranted, in the Department’s referral procedures as outlined in the Teacher Education Practicum Handbook.
  • Communicate on email to support teacher candidates.
  • Monitor progress indicators and assess teacher candidates throughout the practicum according to the practicum advisor requirements.
  • Submit final grades by deadlines.
