About The Position

Brock University is seeking to fill 20 positions for Education Instructor - Practicum Advisor for the Practicum for Teaching in the Ontario Context (PJ and JI) course within the Department of Educational Studies, Teacher Education Program. This role involves supporting teacher candidates in connecting their learning to practice, fostering culturally responsive and competent practitioners, and engaging students in conversations on educational inclusion, equity, and pedagogy. The position requires awareness of critical practices, unconscious biases, and inclusivity, as well as collaboration with associate teachers and principals. The appointment is for the Winter 2027 term, from December 7, 2026, to February 26, 2027.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of recent (last five years) teaching/school experience; specifically in the area of mentoring new teachers and/or teacher candidates.
  • A master's degree or research related experience.
  • A master's degree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization.
  • Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers.
  • Must be in good standing with the OCT at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education.
  • Exhibits contemporary knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy including assessment.
  • Knowledge about social justice and equity through anti-racist and anti-oppressive lenses.
  • Experience facilitating challenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners.
  • Experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners.
  • Competency in using educational technology and platforms for content creation, course management and delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of teacher candidates as culturally responsive and competent practitioners.
  • Use the log of professional practice to engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy.
  • Be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students.
  • Attend to unconscious biases (both self and teacher candidate), and encourage inclusivity.
  • Work with associate teachers (ATs), and respond to ATs correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Complete required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class.
  • Complete required Gender and Sexual Violence supports for teacher candidates training.
  • Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications with teacher candidates and program personnel.
  • Collaborate and co-plan with co-advisor.
  • Effectively deliver all aspects of the course, including using online platforms, and virtual meetings for communication.
  • Manage instructional contact time and non-contact time according to the requirements outlined in the practicum advisor requirements and Log of Teaching Practice.
  • Adapt instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs, including liaising with Student Accessibility Services as required for specific students.
  • Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to course concepts/content and Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT.
  • Work collegially and collaboratively with other team instructors, course team lead(s) including attending team meetings and debriefings.
  • Mentor teacher candidates for practicum placements (P/J/I/) with reference to the Teacher Education Practicum Handbook.
  • Coach/mentor teacher candidates and work with associate teachers.
  • Respond to associate teacher’s correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Participate, as warranted, in the Program’s referral procedures as outlined in the Teacher Education Practicum Handbook.
  • Communicate on email to support teacher candidates.
  • Evaluate teacher candidates during the practicum.
  • Submit final grades by deadlines.
