About The Position

EnPowered is hiring a Dispatch Operator to manage electricity-market events on behalf of commercial, industrial, and institutional customers. The role aims to maximize customer savings while minimizing disruption to their operations across coincident peaks, demand response, monthly demand charges, and energy arbitrage in IESO, PJM, and NYISO markets. As the role develops, it will involve directly controlling batteries and other assets in the field as market conditions evolve. The Dispatch Operator will use forecasts, weather and grid data, market reports, and AI-assisted tools to make time-sensitive operating decisions. The position begins as part of a team making event decisions and is expected to grow into primary decision-making responsibility. It is an individual-contributor role focused on developing expertise in market operations rather than people management. EnPowered describes itself as a small team with clear ownership, cross-functional collaboration, frequent iteration, and an expectation that employees use AI tools in their work. The position offers work-from-home flexibility, flexible schedules, and regular team events, including quarterly team onsites. Early mornings, evenings, and some weekends may be required during peak seasons.

Requirements

  • Two to five years of experience in the energy sector, such as utility operations, grid or system operations, dispatch, or energy services.
  • Solid understanding of electricity markets and commercial electricity bills, including wholesale prices, capacity, coincident peaks, demand charges, and demand response.
  • Comfort making decisions using forecasts, weather data, and probabilities rather than certainties.
  • Calm, decisive judgment under time pressure.
  • Precise written communication.
  • Daily use of AI tools, a habit of checking their output, and interest in building AI tools.
  • Availability for early mornings, evenings, and some weekends during peak seasons.
  • Drive to become a recognized expert in market operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Dispatch experience with batteries, generators, or other distributed energy resources.
  • Experience with an energy management system (EMS) or SCADA system.
  • Knowledge of Ontario's renewed market (day-ahead market and OZP), PJM, or NYISO.
  • Experience with the IESO capacity auction or Ontario's Industrial Conservation Initiative (Class A).
  • Python or SQL skills for working with price, forecast, and interval data.
  • Background in meteorology or weather forecasting.

Responsibilities

  • Manage market events from the first alert through the all-clear, monitoring conditions and deciding how customers should respond.
  • Identify likely coincident peak days and hours in IESO (Ontario 5CP), PJM, and NYISO using forecast models, weather data, and grid operator reports.
  • Assess IESO capacity auction events and utility demand response programs; decide what to communicate to customers and manage activations through settlement.
  • Keep registrations, bids, and auction submissions on track.
  • Identify customer-specific opportunities based on each site's equipment, operating limits, and savings opportunities; develop and carry out plans using batteries and flexible loads while honoring customer commitments.
  • Control assets through the energy management system (EMS), including dispatching batteries and setting and monitoring operating limits.
  • Work with the engineering team to improve energy management tools.
  • Ensure event notifications are accurate, timely, and clear about the actions customers should take.
  • Review, correct, and document reasoning for AI agent recommendations and notification drafts; test the tools against historical events and identify additional data needs.
  • Review event and seasonal outcomes, improve procedures and tools, monitor new programs and market-rule changes, and bring market opportunity recommendations to the team.
