About The Position

Sonos is seeking a Product Marketing Director to lead its Product Marketing team, processes, and cross-functional relationships. The role owns global product narratives and the creative toolkit used to bring Sonos hardware and software to market. It ensures every product and software initiative has a clear role in the Sonos system and in customers’ homes and lives, and that differentiating features are communicated clearly and compellingly. The position focuses upstream in the product development cycle, shaping strategic positioning early. Go-to-market planning, production, and deployment are owned by consumer marketing and creative teams. The Director reports to the VP of Global Brand Strategy and works with Brand Strategy, Product Owners, Product Finance, Insights, UX, creative teams, regional and segment marketing, and commercial leaders. This is a hybrid position requiring applicants to live within commuting distance of New York or Boston. Sonos cannot sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this role; applicants must be authorized to work for any U.S. employer now and in the future.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience in product marketing and delivery of product marketing assets in global, product-led organizations involving both hardware and software.
  • 5+ years managing a product marketing team in a relevant environment.
  • Demonstrated experience defining, optimizing, and deploying processes and deliverables with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Track record of developing product narratives that inspire breakthrough product demonstration, explanation, and onboarding content.
  • Ability to identify, gather, evaluate, and synthesize product, competitive, audience, and cultural intelligence from multiple sources, both within cross-functional teams and externally.
  • Experience integrating audience inputs from multiple sources, including product, commercial, and media, into a unified strategic point of view.
  • Proven ability to partner with and inspire creative teams.
  • Proven ability to simplify process and organizational complexity into clear, action-oriented ways of working for a Product Marketing team.
  • Clear, confident communication skills as a manager and across senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any U.S. employer, both now and in the future; visa sponsorship is unavailable.
  • Qualified applicants must live within commuting distance of New York or Boston.

Nice To Haves

  • Product-rigorous and brand-fluent approach.
  • Comfort defining and evolving processes, or navigating a lack of process.
  • Concise communication style, using brevity for clarity.
  • Ability to generate and inspire unexpected ways of communicating and demonstrating product capabilities.
  • Comfort doing consequential upstream work before outcomes are visible.
  • Generous, elevating strategic partnership and collaboration, with the judgment to manage or decline feedback when appropriate.
  • High standards for strategic thinking and creative quality.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Product Marketing team and define and oversee its processes and deliverables.
  • Own the global product and system narrative arc, from current positioning through future-state positioning.
  • Partner with Brand Strategy to contribute to the brand narrative based on new products, their role in the system, and the audiences they may attract.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners to develop authoritative narratives for key product and software innovations, connecting product truth, audience, and brand to inform feature prioritization, decisions, naming, launch briefs, regional adaptations, and channel executions.
  • Ensure product narratives incorporate audience insights and system thinking, rather than focusing only on specifications, commercial objectives, or competition.
  • Work with Product Owners, Product Finance, and Insights teams to gather and synthesize product, competitive, and commercial intelligence for product narratives, pricing, business cases, and investment recommendations.
  • Maintain narrative coherence as products progress from launch through their commercial lifecycle.
  • Lead the learning agenda and contribute to research execution; collaborate with UX and Insights on research plans, participate in research, and use findings to shape narratives, audience definitions, insights, and product and launch strategies.
  • Deliver audience and cultural insights on topics such as the intelligent home, privacy, and home audio.
  • Own the product toolkit, working with creative teams to develop narratives, channel copy libraries, visual assets, demonstration content, audience definitions and insights, and commercial and competitive analysis.
  • Collaborate with Product, Revenue, Training, Consumer Marketing, Commercial Marketing, and Communications throughout toolkit development to ensure strategic alignment and appropriate deliverables.
  • Partner with marketing teams to ensure campaigns, programs, and activations have clear, measurable KPIs aligned with strategic objectives, and use performance learnings to inform future product strategies and positioning.
  • Partner with creative teams as a strategic collaborator and product expert; champion brand-true, product-correct, unexpected, and compelling storytelling while maintaining a high bar for creative quality and strategic intent.
  • Enable regional and segment marketing by providing consumer, professional, and retail marketing teams with strategic context and baseline assets to adapt global direction for their channels and markets.
