About The Position

American Express is seeking a Director of Digital Product Management to define and drive the end-to-end vision and strategy for its Enterprise Observability platform, covering Logging, Metrics, Tracing, and Events (MELT). The role owns the evolution of observability capabilities across a portfolio of tools and platforms, building a cohesive, scalable, and future-ready ecosystem for thousands of engineers and SREs. This is a platform strategy leadership role at the intersection of product strategy, platform architecture, and emerging innovation. The Director will shape enterprise observability, including AI-driven observability, AIOps integration, and intelligent automation. The role requires systems thinking, strong product judgment, and the ability to align stakeholders around a unified vision. The Director will lead and develop Product Managers, set product direction across MELT capabilities, and make portfolio-level decisions about platform consolidation, vendors, and build-versus-buy choices. They will partner with Engineering, SRE, and Application Support teams to deliver and operationalize scalable platforms, define success metrics, and communicate strategy and tradeoffs to senior leaders and cross-functional partners. U.S. employment eligibility is required; American Express will not pursue visa sponsorship for this position.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in Product Management, with strong experience in platform, infrastructure, or developer products.
  • At least 3 years of experience leading and developing Product Managers.
  • Experience defining product strategy across multiple tools or platforms, rather than only a single product.
  • Strong understanding of observability systems and telemetry, including logs, metrics, traces, and events.
  • Experience working with distributed systems, microservices, and cloud-native architectures.
  • Proven ability to influence and align stakeholders across complex, federated organizations.
  • Excellent communication and strategic thinking skills.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States; American Express will not pursue visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience implementing OpenTelemetry and modern observability ecosystems, such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or cloud-native tooling.
  • Experience with platform portfolio rationalization or vendor strategy.
  • Exposure to AIOps, AI/ML in observability, or intelligent automation.
  • Experience in large-scale enterprise or regulated environments.
  • Systems- and platform-oriented thinking rather than a feature-focused approach.
  • Strong product judgment and ability to make complex tradeoffs.
  • Ability to balance long-term vision with pragmatic execution.
  • Ability to drive alignment through influence and clarity of vision.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and complexity.
  • Passion for improving developer and platform experience at scale.

  • Lead and develop a team of Product Managers, setting a high bar for product thinking, execution, and impact.

  • Drive portfolio-level decisions, including build-versus-buy, open-source-versus-vendor strategy, and platform consolidation.
  • Partner with Engineering to deliver highly scalable, reliable distributed observability platforms.
  • Shape and advance emerging capabilities such as AI observability, intelligent alerting, and signal correlation.
  • Ensure observability platforms integrate effectively with AIOps, incident management, and cloud ecosystems.
  • Establish and track product success metrics tied to platform value, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
  • Communicate product strategy, tradeoffs, and outcomes effectively to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Set product strategy and roadmaps aligned with enterprise needs, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • Understand the needs of developers, SREs, and platform teams to inform product direction.
  • Partner with Engineering, SRE, and Application Support teams to ensure successful delivery and operationalization.
