About The Position

The Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for networking and sharing information about the Salvation Army’s programs and services. The role oversees special community engagement and fundraising events and activities as well as the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign. The work of this position supports the organizational desire to move from transactional distribution services toward relational and transformational ministry. Working within the mission and vision of The Salvation Army and the integrated program structure at Khi Community, they will focus on strengthening community partnerships, enhancing donor and volunteer involvement, connecting neighbors with relevant and meaningful care services, and developing outreach programs where physical, mental, social and spiritual needs are addressed.

Requirements

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college diploma program of 2 academic years, preferably in a human services field, i.e., Social Services Worker.
  • Ability and/or willingness to provide or obtain a Safe Food Handlers Certification.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license, own vehicle and insurance, provide a driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience with community engagement (events, communication and fundraising).
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff, and volunteers.
  • Experience coordinating volunteers.
  • Exceptional knowledge of the grant proposal submission and process.
  • Experience with social media platforms; content creation and management and newsletter development.
  • Proficient in a computerized environment; must have strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite and the use of social media.
  • Have a keen interest in the social services sector and a desire to see lives transformed.
  • Possess a genuine concern for and interest in the marginalization of society.
  • Possess well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with church members and volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Hands-on experience and human services experience working with marginalized individuals is required; a working knowledge of mental health and addiction issues is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of community-based resources is required and experience networking with government and social service agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Milton Khi Officers and Staff to promote and improve the profile of The Salvation Army Khi Community within the Town of Milton.
  • Actively promotes Khi Community programs to clients; effectively communicates TSA programs and services to community members and facilitates new connections with clients, donors, volunteers, church members, and wider community neighbors.
  • Utilize social media and other communication channels to engage clients, community partners, and the public.
  • Liaise with community partners (existing and potential) to establish and maintain working partnerships, including arranging and updating necessary documentation (e.g. collaboration agreements, certificates of insurance), scheduling on-site community programs, maintaining a suitable shared workspace for partner programs, advertising programs, and resourcing community services team to refer appropriately.
  • Assess existing programs for relevance; communicate potential changes, enhancements and involvement opportunities with the Milton Khi Officers and Leadership.
  • Research and propose new opportunities that will enable Milton Khi to deliver creative and innovative programming designed to address community needs as requested.
  • Ensure that programming is relationally focused, contributing to a safe space for exploring needs (physical, mental, social and spiritual), and shaping long-term transformational action.
  • In consultation with the Corps Officer and/or Community Services Manager, recruit, train and facilitate church members and community volunteers to actively engage in community ministries.
  • Where applicable, link community members to the church family and church programs, sharing the hope and love of Jesus in a manner that supports and respects the faith journey of our neighbors and their families.
  • In consultation with the Community Services Manager, develop, implement and review policies and procedures relating to the volunteer program and connect volunteers with necessary training.
  • Ensures the long-term sustainability of outreach and new programs through effective funding strategies and relationship development.
  • May assist with food bank operations, or intake responsibilities when needed.
  • Ensures that all duties are completed in accordance with the principles, standards, policies, and procedures of The Salvation Army.
  • Organize, plan, and coordinate the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign, working with local store managers, schools, businesses and community groups according to the policies and procedures outlined by The Salvation Army.
  • Oversee the management of the kettle schedule to ensure maximum coverage of all kettles shifts and locations by organizing shifts with volunteers, service groups and approved kettle workers.
  • In consultation with the Community Services Manager, support seasonal events and programs, including Christmas assistance, food drives, summer camps, school supply assistance, pop-up events and other Community Services programs as required.
  • Responsible for various promotional material, newsletters, and regular updates of the unit’s website and social media sites.
  • Conduct seasonal volunteer and client experience surveys.
  • Establish and utilize social media and bulk email engagement metrics to measure outcomes specific to increased awareness of programs and services in response to multi-channel digital communications.
  • Responsible for identifying, researching, and recommending grant funding opportunities and strategic initiatives aligned with the organization’s mission and values.
  • In consultation with the Corps Officers and Community Services Manager develops, writes, and submits compelling grant proposals to government agencies, foundations, and other funding partners to support projects and initiatives.
  • Prepare and submit timely and accurate grant/funding reports to funders, and to the Corps Officers detailing project progress, outcomes achieved and financial expenditures compliance and grant/funding requirements.
  • Maintain accurate data in a timely and organized manner, which includes operational reports, statistical reports, and client participation waivers / agreements as required.
  • Create and assist in presentations promoting volunteer opportunities to businesses, schools and the public as required.
  • Answer phone and greet the public as needed.
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained in accordance with TSA Operating Policies and applicable legislation.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
