About The Position

The Commercial Manager in Training (CMIT) reports to a Commercial Leader and is a developmental role designed to build the knowledge, judgment, and field capability required to succeed in Radius Recycling’s organization within the metals recycling industry. Through structured training, field exposure, and cross-functional learning, the CMIT develops an understanding of ferrous and nonferrous scrap procurement, commodity grading, pricing strategy, margin management, logistics, supplier development, and operational execution. This role aims to create a strong pipeline of future commercial talent by preparing the incumbent for broader account responsibility and commercial leadership opportunities. The CMIT will learn to generate and grow purchases of scrap metals within an assigned geographic area, support the commercial team in managing a book of business, and visit current and prospective suppliers. The role provides structured development in commercial negotiations, commodity market awareness, logistics coordination, cost-to-serve considerations, inventory management, and supplier relationship management, learning how commercial decisions impact various business aspects.

Requirements

  • Highschool Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to travel frequently within the assigned territory.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Supply Chain, Finance, Operations, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in sales, procurement, logistics, manufacturing, recycling, industrial operations, commodities, or a related business environment; internship, co-op, or rotational experience in these areas may also qualify as relevant experience.
  • Experience in scrap metal recycling, industrial services, manufacturing, demolition, transportation, brokerage, commodity trading, or other supplier-facing business development environments.
  • Demonstrated relationship-building, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills in school, work, or related settings.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb, and traverse uneven surfaces for extended periods of time; operate a motor vehicle; use hands for writing and keyboarding; review documents and inspect materials visually; and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically.
  • Must be able to work safely in an active industrial environment while wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • All applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to travel frequently within the assigned territory.
  • Radius Recycling participates in E-Verify for all U.S. new hires.
  • An offer of U.S. employment by Radius Recycling or any of its subsidiaries is contingent on the satisfactory completion of a post-offer drug screen and background check.

Responsibilities

  • Strictly adheres to all Radius Recycling health, safety, environmental, and operational standards.
  • Wears required personal protective equipment and follows all yard, plant, and customer-site safety requirements.
  • Helps maintain a safe environment for employees, customers, contractors, and visitors.
  • Immediately reports safety concerns, environmental issues, incidents, near misses, and policy violations in accordance with company expectations.
  • Learns Radius Recycling’s commercial strategy, supplier segmentation approach, and purchasing models across ferrous and nonferrous commodities.
  • Trains on development and management of a book of business, including prospecting, supplier retention, account planning, and follow-through.
  • Supports the commercial team in identifying, pursuing, and developing new sources of recyclable materials.
  • Participates in supplier visits, ride-alongs, account reviews, bid opportunities, and relationship-building activities.
  • Learns how to assess supplier needs, service requirements, material flow, quality expectations, and competitive market conditions.
  • Develops negotiation skills related to pricing, freight, deductions, downgrades, claims, and other commercial terms.
  • Builds working knowledge of ferrous and nonferrous grades, inspection standards, contamination risks, and material quality considerations.
  • Learns how commodity value is influenced by market conditions, specifications, recovery yields, processing costs, freight, and downstream demand.
  • Trains on pricing tools, commercial reports, and market intelligence used to support purchasing and sales decisions.
  • Develops the ability to discuss market trends, competitive dynamics, and pricing rationale in a professional and commercially sound manner.
  • Learns how to evaluate margin impact by considering purchase price, transportation, processing, recovery, inventory, and shipment economics.
  • Gains exposure to yard, shredding, inspection, receiving, grading, logistics, and shipment processes to understand the full metals recycling value chain.
  • Works cross-functionally with operations and support teams to align commercial commitments with site capabilities, safety requirements, and service expectations.
  • Learns scrap acceptance standards, material flow considerations, inventory management expectations, and operational constraints that affect profitability.
  • Supports communication between commercial and operations teams regarding supplier service issues, quality concerns, shipment timing, and special handling needs.
  • Develops understanding of internal controls, documentation requirements, and compliance processes that support commercial transactions.
  • Learns to use company systems, commercial tools, spreadsheets, and reporting resources to track suppliers, pricing, shipments, margin, and account activity.
  • Assists with preparation and review of reports related to volume, purchasing activity, pricing, market trends, and supplier performance.
  • Develops the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and escalate issues or opportunities to commercial leadership.
  • Maintains accurate records, call notes, follow-up actions, and account documentation.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as needed or assigned.
  • Participates in developmental assignments intended to expand commercial, operational, and leadership capability.
  • Supports the Company’s internal control process by understanding, communicating, and complying with established controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Helps identify opportunities to improve processes and elevates concerns related to operations, compliance, ethics, or policy violations through appropriate channels.
