About The Position

The Checker operates the cash register and assists customers throughout the store, helping ensure a positive customer experience. The role involves accurately processing transactions, following applicable guidelines, supporting store operations, and maintaining a clean and orderly register area. Checkers may assist in other areas of the store and take on special projects as assigned. No education or experience is required; training is provided.

Requirements

Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables.
Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience.
No education or experience requirements; training is provided.

Responsibilities

Provide prompt, friendly customer service and help make each customer visit positive.
Operate the cash register and accurately process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Follow local, state, and federal guidelines for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay knowledgeable about item lookup and department numbers, item features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and take customers to requested items.
Keep the register area clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable.
Communicate clearly on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
Stay aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist store management with displays and decorations for special promotions and events as needed.
Assist in other areas of the store and take on special projects as assigned.
Maintain personal hygiene and dress standards and follow Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
