About The Position
Hy-Vee is seeking a customer-focused Checker for its Grocery department. Checkers operate registers, assist customers throughout the store, and help ensure customers have a positive experience. The role involves processing transactions and payments, handling returns, supporting bagging and carry-out services, maintaining and stocking merchandise, communicating with customers and colleagues, and helping keep the register area and store safe and orderly. Training is provided; no education or experience requirements are listed. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen.
Requirements

- Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks involving a few concrete variables.
- Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing.

- Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift; perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending.
- Successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen.
Responsibilities
- Provide prompt, friendly customer service and help customers throughout the store.
- Operate the cash register accurately and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
- Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
- Follow local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
- Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
- Stay informed about item look-up and department numbers, item features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
- Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and take customers to requested items.
- Keep the register area clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the drawer.
- Verify register balances at the beginning and end of shifts where applicable.
- Communicate clearly by intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
- Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
- Assist store management with displays and decorations for special promotions and events as needed.
- Assist in other areas of the store and complete special projects as assigned.
- Follow personal hygiene and dress standards, Hy-Vee policies, and store guidelines.
- Report to work as scheduled and on time.
