About The Position
The Checker provides friendly, accurate customer service at checkout and throughout the store. The role operates the cash register, processes various payment types and returns, supports bagging and carry-out services, and helps customers locate products. Checkers also maintain merchandise and checkout areas, support store safety, and assist with promotions and other store tasks. Training is provided; no education or experience is required.
Requirements
- Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks involving a few concrete variables.
- Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions.
- Communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
- Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a positive customer experience.
- No education or experience requirements; training is provided.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers and provide prompt, friendly service.
- Operate the cash register accurately and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
- Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
- Follow applicable requirements for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
- Bag merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
- Stay informed about item and department numbers, product features, weekly ad prices, and sale items.
- Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and help customers find items.
- Keep the register area clean and supplied, and report improper cash levels.
- Verify register balances at the beginning and end of shifts where applicable.
- Communicate on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel.
- Remain alert to support store safety and security.
- Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events.
- Assist in other store areas and complete special projects as assigned.
- Maintain personal hygiene and dress standards and follow Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
- Report to work as scheduled and on time.
