About The Position

Coordinates communication and information flow between all vessels, employees, customers, company managers, vendors and regulatory agencies in a professional and courteous manner. This role involves utilizing electronic dispatching and vessel tracking systems, scheduling barge berthings, communicating with tugs at sea via various radio and phone systems, preparing daily dispatch notifications, maintaining logs of activities, and informing crews of manning schedules and job assignments. The position also includes coordinating vessel refueling, carrying out emergency procedures, monitoring unusual conditions after hours, and occasionally making dispatch decisions without direct management intervention.

Requirements

  • English language necessary for oral, written and phone communications.
  • Basic math skills for calculations involving payroll.
  • Knowledge of legal aspects regarding EEO -- hiring and discipline.
  • Computer skills, Windows, Word, Excel.
  • General knowledge of various office machines.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, while maintaining a professional and courteous attitude.
  • Ability to concentrate to ensure safety of vessel and crew.
  • Ability to maintain electronic dispatching and vessel tracking data system and other logs accurately.
  • Ability to apply mathematical knowledge to compute time and other data.
  • Ability to be alert to changing situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of general human resources functions and applicable regulations is preferable.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize electronic dispatching and vessel tracking system to enter HTB/YB harbor activities and sailings.
  • Utilize the Young Brothers Barge Daily Movement sheet for scheduling berthing of barges.
  • Communicate with all tugs at sea using VHF, SSB (single side band) and NEXTEL radio/cellular phones.
  • Prepare Daily Dispatch Notification of vessel arrivals and departures.
  • Regularly input data using a desk-top computer.
  • Maintain log (dispatch/radio log) of all important activities with harbor and inter-island tugs.
  • Inform employees of normal vessel manning as scheduled by management.
  • Clarify any scheduled job assignment questions for crew.
  • Communicate to crews any changes to job assignments.
  • Coordinate vessel refueling.
  • Carry out required Company emergency procedures, when necessary.
  • Monitor and report any unusual conditions around company area after hours.
  • On occasion make vessel and/or crew dispatch decisions without management intervention.
  • Perform other duties and functions as directed by management personnel.
