About The Position

The Career Navigator systematically works to facilitate career awareness activities PK-20 and works to promote professional skills with students, focusing primarily on students with disabilities. The Career Navigator assists with career development, awareness, and planning activities across local districts, refers students for placement opportunities with employers, and supports EDP completion through Xello in coordination with LEA school counselors. This role also involves attending IEPs for students with disabilities, providing consultation and professional development for CTE instructors, and working with students on an individual/small group basis on strategies for success. Additionally, the Career Navigator assists with career-related events and curriculum development/implementation as needed.

Requirements

  • No physical or mental restrictions that would, with reasonable accommodation, prevent performance of the essential job functions and responsibilities.
  • Possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate in special education with at least one special education endorsement.
  • An ability to work effectively with all levels of students.
  • Demonstrated communication skills and resourcefulness in working with a broad range of students, staff, administrators, employers, parents, and the media.
  • Possess or able to readily meet all state requirements applicable to professionals within this category.
  • Working knowledge of curriculum development, behavioral development, and education systems.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • The ability to organize short and long-term duties and responsibilities is important. This position deals with a wide variety of tasks and requires good prioritization and organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Evidence of four or more years of successful experience as a special education teacher.
  • Experience working with students on career development/transition planning preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate career awareness activities PK-20.
  • Promote professional skills with students, focusing primarily on students with disabilities.
  • Assist with career development, awareness, and planning activities across local districts.
  • Refer students for placement opportunities with employers.
  • Support EDP completion through Xello, in coordination with LEA school counselors.
  • Attend 10th grade IEPs for students with disabilities.
  • Provide consultation and professional development for CTE instructors.
  • Work with students on an individual/small group basis as needed, on strategies for success.
  • Assist with career related events and curriculum development/implementation as needed.
  • Acquire and maintain thorough knowledge of resources related to career development at all grade levels.
  • Develop working knowledge and understanding of all special populations’ categories.
  • Report, support, and track identified special populations’ students toward success in their CTE program.
  • Assist students and graduates in career planning and coordinate with work-based learning staff for placement relevant to identified needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Assist students with transition planning and connecting students with disabilities to post-secondary opportunities and/or employment.
  • Establish strong and consistent communication networks with employers, teachers, students, parents, and others involved in the career awareness process.
  • Work with teachers and others to establish and maintain a coordinated and effective community wide promotional and informational program for career education.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities to maintain an optimal level of expertise, ensure current knowledge of technological advances in business and industry, and establish a network of colleagues.
  • Work with teachers to help guide the development of related instruction.
  • Other duties as assigned.
