About The Position

The Barista is an integral member of the Barnes & Noble Café team, welcoming customers, answering questions, recommending beverages and café items, and providing quick, professional service at the register. The role also supports the attractive presentation and efficient operation of the Café by stocking deliveries, maintaining displays and dining areas, preparing food and drinks, and completing cleaning tasks. Baristas are expected to demonstrate reliable attendance, flexibility in responding to store scheduling needs, a positive and supportive approach to work, cheerful customer service, and willingness to learn. They receive training in café operations and are expected to develop proficiency in store technology, merchandising, register operation, receiving and stocking deliveries, food and beverage preparation, cleaning, FIFO practices, loss prevention, and de-escalation. They may also support the bookfloor team and other stores in the wider Cluster when needed and able. As they gain experience, Baristas build knowledge of café products, promotions, customization recommendations, retail options, training tools, and food safety, hygiene, and sanitation procedures. The role offers a career path toward Senior Barista as skills develop. Employees must comply with company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Welcome customers, answer questions, and help them choose beverages and café items.
Operate registers quickly, accurately, and in a friendly, professional manner.
Maintain attractive café, counter, floor-fixture, bake-case, and dining-area presentation.
Help receive, unpack, and accurately stock deliveries.
Prepare food and drinks correctly using product information and recipe guides.
Complete daily and weekly cleaning tasks and maintain café cleanliness.
Follow First In First Out (FIFO) practices and date products consistently and correctly.
Support the bookfloor team when needed and, when able, assist other stores in the Cluster.
Follow loss prevention procedures, identify theft or problematic behavior, and seek support using de-escalation techniques.
Build knowledge of café beverages, bakery and savory items, gifting, retail options, promotions, and product customization.
Share product and promotion knowledge with customers and colleagues and support café sales objectives.
Follow café safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines and procedures.
Comply with company policies and procedures.
