About The Position

The Assistant Youth Mentor supports before- and after-school enrichment programs for the 2026–2027 school year. The specific childcare site will be determined during the interview. This role helps children learn and grow through engaging, developmentally appropriate activities and positive interactions, while maintaining a supportive and organized learning environment. The position may involve overseeing classroom staff. The YMCA describes the role as an opportunity to work with a supportive team, learn and grow, and contribute to strengthening the community.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, or enrollment in at least two years of child development coursework.
• At least two years of verified child care experience.
• Prior experience working with children, whether professional, volunteer, or familial.
• Passion for working with children in a fun, diverse environment.
• Ability to pass all relevant clearances and keep trainings current, including at least six hours of child-care-related training annually.

Responsibilities

• Find engaging ways to help children learn while maintaining environments that build their self-esteem.
• Implement the program curriculum and ensure learning experiences are child-centered and developmentally appropriate; potentially oversee classroom staff.
• Provide quality adult-child interactions through engagement, positive and encouraging feedback, and open-ended questions.
• Use positive reinforcement to redirect behavior.
• Communicate patiently, kindly, effectively, and in a timely manner with parents and guardians.
• Maintain accurate daily attendance records, emergency contact binders, allergy reports, timesheets, incident reports, weekly reports, and child observation reports.
• Keep centers supplied with quality learning materials and organize them in labeled containers for the appropriate learning centers.
• Attend monthly team-planning meetings, or more often as needed.
