About The Position

The Assistant Youth Mentor supports the YMCA’s before- and after-school enrichment programming for the 2026–2027 school year. The role focuses on helping children learn and grow in a fun, diverse environment through engaging, developmentally appropriate activities, positive interactions, and behavior guidance. The childcare site will be determined during the interview. The position may include overseeing classroom staff.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, or enrollment in at least two years of child development coursework.
• At least two years of verified childcare experience.
• Experience working with children, whether professional, volunteer, or familial.
• Passion for working with children in a fun, diverse environment.
• Ability to pass all relevant clearances.
• Ability to keep trainings current, including at least six hours of childcare-related training annually.

Responsibilities

• Find engaging ways to help children learn while maintaining environments that support their self-esteem.
• Implement program curriculum and ensure learning experiences are child-centered and developmentally appropriate, potentially overseeing classroom staff.
• Provide quality adult-child interactions through engagement, positive feedback, encouragement, and open-ended questions.
• Use positive reinforcement to redirect behavior.
• Communicate patiently, kindly, effectively, and promptly with parents and guardians.
• Maintain accurate daily attendance records, emergency contact binders, and allergy reports.
• Complete required timesheets, incident reports, weekly reports, child observation reports, and other compliance paperwork.
• Keep centers supplied with quality learning materials and organized in labeled containers by learning center.
• Attend monthly team-planning meetings or additional meetings as needed.
