About The Position

The Assistant Store Manager helps provide a positive shoe-shopping experience for the whole family through customer engagement, team leadership, and strong store operations. This role acts as the store leader when the Store Manager is absent, develops associates, and supports sales targets and growth goals through coaching, training, and development. The Assistant Store Manager stays informed about product and trends and supports the team’s product knowledge and store presentation.

Working in partnership with the Store Manager, the Assistant Store Manager supports recruiting and hiring, staffing levels, daily retail operations, sales performance, and team culture. The role promotes an inclusive and respectful environment, ensures company policies and programs are followed, and helps assess and develop internal talent. Other responsibilities may be performed as needed to meet business needs.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 1 year of sales experience; retail sales is preferred.
• Experience interviewing, hiring, and training people.
• Ability to lead, manage, motivate, and communicate positively with associates at all levels.
• Ability to train, coach, and develop associates to deliver an engaging customer experience and execute operational tasks.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion while partnering with the Store Sales Manager as needed.
• Strong cognitive skills, including problem-solving, analysis, decision-making, and financial and quantitative analysis.
• Advanced working knowledge of general retail practices and procedures.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes holidays, nights, weekends, and extended hours.
• Ability to regularly lift up to 40 pounds from floor level to above shoulder height using appropriate equipment and safety techniques.
• Ability to meet the demands of frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and repetitive lifting.
• Ability to remain mobile on the sales floor for extended periods.

Responsibilities

• Inspire associates and foster a customer-focused culture centered on customer relationships and operational excellence.
• Coach associates on selling behaviors and customer engagement.
• Network with external candidates and collaborate with the Store Manager to interview and hire associates.
• Manage and support daily retail operations, including pricing, shipping processing, and inventory.
• Support staffing levels based on associate availability, peak days, and seasonal hiring needs.
• Work toward sales goals and use insights and observations with the Store Manager to improve results.
• Promote a diverse, inclusive, positive, and respectful team environment; support associate engagement and retention.
• Act as the store leader in the Store Manager’s absence.
• Support compliance with company policies and programs through training, ongoing development, inspection, and follow-up.
• Assess team strengths and development opportunities and partner with the Store Manager to develop internal talent.
• Train, coach, and develop associates in selling techniques, customer experience, and operational tasks.
• Perform other responsibilities as needed to meet business needs.
