About The Position

The Assistant Store Manager supports the Famous Footwear store’s sales, customer experience, and daily operations, and acts as store leader when the Store Manager is away. The role focuses on developing and motivating associates, building customer relationships, helping the team meet sales and growth goals, and maintaining an engaging, inclusive store culture. The Assistant Store Manager also supports product presentation and team knowledge of current trends and merchandise.

In partnership with the Store Manager, the Assistant Store Manager helps discover, interview, hire, train, and develop talent; supports staffing levels; and oversees retail operations such as pricing, shipping processing, and inventory. The position applies sales insights to improve store results and supports compliance with company policies and programs through training, inspection, and follow-up. Other responsibilities may be performed as needed to meet the needs of the business.

The role requires a flexible schedule, including holidays, nights, weekends, and extended hours. It also involves frequent physical activity, including walking and standing for extended periods and lifting up to 40 pounds.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 1 year of sales experience; retail sales is preferred.
• Experience interviewing, hiring, and training people.
• Ability to lead, manage, motivate, and communicate positively with associates at all levels.
• Ability to train, coach, and develop associates to provide an engaging customer experience and execute operational tasks.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion while partnering with the Store Sales Manager as needed.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, decision-making, financial, and quantitative skills.
• Advanced working knowledge of general retail practices and procedures.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including holidays, nights, weekends, and extended hours.
• Ability to regularly lift up to 40 pounds from floor level to above shoulder height using appropriate equipment and safety techniques.
• Ability to meet the demands of frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and repetitive lifting.
• Ability to remain mobile on the sales floor for extended periods.

Responsibilities

• Inspire associates to provide strong customer service and build customer relationships through coaching on selling behaviors.
• Seek out potential external talent and collaborate with the Store Manager to interview and hire candidates.
• Support training, development, and coaching of associates in customer experience, selling techniques, and operational processes.
• Manage daily retail operations, including pricing, shipping processing, inventory, and maintaining store standards.
• Support staffing levels based on associate availability, peak days, and seasonal hiring needs.
• Take accountability for sales goals and contribute to store performance by applying insights and observations with the Store Manager.
• Promote an inclusive, respectful, positive, and supportive team environment.
• Act as store leader in the Store Manager’s absence.
• Support compliance with company policies and programs through training, development, inspection, and follow-up.
• Assess team strengths and development opportunities and support internal talent development with the Store Manager.
