Why Can't I Get a Job Interview?

If you have been sending out resumes and applications and not getting a response, you might be asking yourself, what am I doing wrong? Don't worry! We are here to help you pinpoint the problem and start getting interviews in no time.

We will look at why it's been so hard to get an interview and what you can do to increase your chances.

Why can't I get any job interviews?

Job seekers can get very discouraged when they are continuously applying to jobs and not even getting a chance to interview. What many don't realize is that hundreds of candidates could be applying for the same role. It's impossible to bring in every candidate for an interview though, so you might be getting passed over.

Here are a few tips that may help get your resume to the top of the stack.

  • Make sure you are applying to jobs that you are qualified for.
  • Customize each cover letter you send out.
  • List your accomplishments and qualifications in a way they can be easily read on your application or resume.
  • Include context to your experience in your cover letter.

Find a personal connection

Before you send your resume through the black hole of the internet, try to find a personal connection at the company. Search career websites such as Linkedin and look on the company's social media sites.

If you have a mutual friend, feel free to reach out and see if they know the hiring manager. If you don't know anyone, there are other things you can do to make sure your resume gets reviewed.

Search for the hiring manager on Linkedin or the company's site. If you can find their contact information, send them an email.

Keep it professional though. You can send something similar to the below.

Hi, I hope this email finds you well. I recently applied to the open position and would like the opportunity to introduce myself and my background. I see you are hiring for a few jobs and would be interested in setting up some time to speak. Please let me know if you have a few minutes to talk. I have attached my resume for your review. Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon.

Hiring managers like candidates that take initiative when it comes to searching for a job. It shows you have a strong will.

But remember, always follow up after sending out your application. Recruiters get bombarded and if you go above and beyond it might make a difference.

Why is it so hard to find a job now?

Depending on the industry you are in, it might feel impossible to find a job. But do some research on what is going on in the business world and economy. There could be reasons out of your control why you aren't finding a job right now.

Are we in a recession or are lots of people unemployed? Is your particular industry taking a hit? If things are hard you might need to lower your expectations.

If you had hoped to land a high paying job, you might need to settle for something more accessible in the meantime. Consider your skills and specific experience, then search for roles that are open that you could excel at.

Don't pay as much attention to the title or salary if you are unemployed. It's always easier to find a new job when you already have paychecks coming in.

Networking

One of the best things job seekers can do is network. Many cities have events for local businesses to recruit candidates and help those in the midst of a job search.

Attend as many of these events as you can. Taking the time to meet with a potential employer can really work in your favor.

You can also network online. Reach out to the recruiter or hiring manager for a role you saw posted. Send them a short note introducing yourself.

Even if there isn't an open role that you are a good fit for, it doesn't hurt to reach out. If you have made a connection, you could get the first call when a job becomes available.

Why can't I find a job?

During a job search, an applicant often gets an initial interview or call and never makes it to the next round. Do you keep failing at job interviews? There could be an easy solution to your interview problems.

You may simply be applying to the wrong jobs. Below are some tips and questions to ask yourself if you are coming up empty handed when applying to jobs.

  • Did you apply for a job that you are unqualified for?
  • Are you looking for jobs in a new industry?
  • Just because you like the idea of a job doesn't mean it's the right fit for you.
  • Does your resume properly highlight your skills and experience?
  • Have someone read your resume and cover letter before sending them out.
  • Take the time to proofread everything before hitting send.
  • Spend time searching the company's website and social media sites before interviewing.

There can be more than one reason you are having trouble getting called back for an interview. If you want to find a job that you can excel at and instead, you are constantly met with rejection, take some time to read articles on how to get the results you are looking for. The process of getting interviews is not easy, but if you use these tips, you should be getting a call from a hiring manager soon enough.
