Can ChatGPT write a resume that effectively markets your unique skills and experience, giving you an edge in today's competitive job market?
Crafting the perfect resume can often feel like a daunting task on the journey to finding your dream job. But it doesn't need to be! With the power of AI, innovative tools like ChatGPT make it possible to create a standout resume in no time.
As the first impression that employers have of you, your resume is your personal marketing tool. And with ChatGPT's impressive capabilities, you can save time and energy while presenting yourself in the best possible light.
From analyzing job descriptions to generating tailored bullet points, ChatGPT can assist job applicants like you in showcasing your strengths and experience while you focus your energy on other important aspects of your job search. But remember, while ChatGPT can provide valuable suggestions and insights, it's crucial to follow the steps outlined below to ensure accuracy.
So whether you're a new job seeker or a seasoned professional, AI tools like ChatGPT are changing the game when it comes to job application strategies. Why not empower yourself with the latest technology and harness the power of AI to take your resume to the next level? With ChatGPT, you can create a personalized resume that stands out and lands you the job of your dreams.
Have you ever wondered how your phone understands voice commands or your email inbox can filter spam messages? What about the way Alexa replies when you ask a question? Well, the answer lies in the power of artificial intelligence, or AI, and one of the most impressive examples of AI technology today is ChatGPT.
ChatGPT, short for "Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3," is a natural language processing model developed by OpenAI. At its core, ChatGPT is a machine-learning model trained on vast amounts of data to generate coherent, human-like responses to a wide range of prompts.
From answering trivia questions to writing cover letters, ChatGPT can generate often human-like text. With seemingly endless possibilities, and as it continues to rise in popularity, it's rapidly transforming how we interact with technology.
Open AI's safety standards highlight four core values their company employs to make ChatGPT a safe tool: minimizing harm, building trust, learning and iterating, and pioneering trust and safety. If you want to dive deeply into the specifics of your use case, read more about their usage, data, and sharing policies here.
Despite being an incredibly powerful tool with endless applications and numerous safety protocols, ChatGPT doesn’t come without risk.
Because ChatGPT isn't human, it can't discern right and wrong—producing convincing but sometimes biased or incorrect information. Because of this, McKinsey & Company suggests when using generative AI tools, users keep a human in the loop and avoid applying the data produced to critical decisions.
And like most technology, ChatGPT continually evolves, bringing new opportunities, benefits, and risks. To harness the full potential of AI, it's crucial to monitor these changes. As suggested by McKinsey, staying up-to-date on the latest advancements and development trends is the key to using it successfully—now and in the future.
Now that you’ve gained some insight into ChatGPT let’s talk about using AI tools like ChatGPT to write your resume. So … can you?
Yes, of course, you can. And you should. (But only if you follow the process below!)
Creating a resume requires a lot of effort; AI tools like ChatGPT make this easier by …
So let's get started and go over the steps for using ChatGPT to write your resume so you can hit your career goals!
At Teal, we believe AI tools like ChatGPT are a means of support and enhancement rather than a complete replacement for all tasks.

Successfully using ChatGPT requires more than just entering a simple command. Watch the video below for a quick tutorial, and then check out some best practices for creating a polished, compelling, professional resume!
Writing effective prompts is the key to getting the most out of ChatGPT's capabilities. So we asked ChatGPT itself for four guidelines users should consider creating inquiries. The response? Be clear and specific, avoid bias, use natural language, and provide context. And while these aren't hard and fast rules, they're fantastic recommendations for getting the most out of the tool.
You see, the quality of ChatGPT's output is tied closely to the type of prompts a user provides. It needs specific information, clear and strategic direction, and contextual relevance to generate the best possible result.
So let’s look at some of our favorite examples for using ChatGPT to write a customized resume based on strategic input!
In the ChatGPT text bar, type the following prompts one at a time:
"Create a professional summary for my resume that is under 100 words, showcasing skills and experiences relevant to a [title] role in [industry]."
"Write three to five resume achievements for [job title or work experience] with metrics."
"Write a list of ten hard and soft skills that would be relevant to a person applying to a [title] role in [industry]."
"Write a list of 10 hobbies or interests unrelated to work that would be relevant to a person applying to a [title] role in [industry]."
(As a note, at Teal, we recommend including three to five hobbies and interests on your resume, but requesting a longer list will help you gain insight into what’s relevant to the role you're applying for.)
With each prompt you give ChatGPT, once it generates output, copy and paste the content into another location you can easily edit, like Google Drive, Word, or Teal.
Then, in ChatGPT, click “Regenerate Response” so you have at least two options to work with. After that, decide which version works best for you (or combine them!) and edit specific details like your contact information and work history.
Also, remember to include your education and certifications when creating your final draft.
Use the AI technology integrated within Teal's Resume Builder to generate professional summaries directly within the Teal platform.
Now that you’ve got a great starting point, it’s time to customize them even further. In fact, it's vital to tailor your resume sections to stand out from other candidates with relevant keywords, metrics, and skills.
To do this, try giving ChatGPT more resources from the description and the results you got with your first prompt.
Your professional summary is a snapshot of your qualifications designed to give hiring managers a quick overview of what you bring to the table. To tailor your summary to a job, use the prompt below.
Your work history demonstrates your relevant experience, credibility, and success. To write tailored resume bullet points for your work history, follow the steps below for each of your employment experiences.
At Teal, we recommend including only job experience pertinent to the role you’re applying for and that you write resume bullet points for each position—three to five for each job.
The skills section of your resume gives hiring managers insight into your capabilities beyond your general work responsibilities. And while your hard skills (technical skills like Google Analytics or Python) are necessary, so are soft or transferable skills like communication, teamwork, and leadership.
To create a list of relevant skills, use the prompt (or a variation of it) below!
“Create a list of ten technical skills and transferable skills for my resume using the job description and resume below as a reference.”
Want to use Teal and ChatGPT but skip those steps for customizing your resume summary and achievements? No problem. Teal’s AI functionality within the Resume Builder integrates with ChatGPT, making this process a breeze.
Follow the instructions above to do the same for your resume achievements. (Yes, it really is that simple!)
And as your continue to build your skillset, using Teal, simply click the box next to each skill you wish to incorporate into your resume for a particular role. If you haven’t already, sign up for Teal today to get started!
Once you’ve completed all the steps above, thoroughly reviewing your ChatGPT results is essential.
A tool like Grammarly or Quillbot AI can help you review the content for grammar, spelling, and overall sentence structure.
Reviewing the data, metrics, and experience is equally important to ensure it’s correct and represents your experience. Remember, you want your resume to reflect who you are and what you can do—accurately.
Following the steps above, we created a few resumes using ChatGPT. Check out the examples below!
