About The Position

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent and three years of veterinary technician experience in a fast-paced hospital; or an associate or bachelor's degree from an AVMA-accredited institution providing training in veterinary technology, veterinary nursing, or veterinary science and one year of experience at a university or large-scale hospital; or current Certified Veterinary Technician standing.
• Experience with Microsoft Office and ability to learn electronic medical records and other software systems.
• Mastery of basic diagnostic-imaging technical skills, including small animal radiography.
• Ability to safely restrain cats, dogs, and exotic patients.
• Ability to assess the attitude and responsiveness of dogs and cats.
• Ability to obtain vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and capillary refill time.
• Ability to identify animals in pain or distress.
• Knowledge and ability to perform IV and IM injections and calculate medication dosages.
• Ability to monitor and identify physiological parameters in sedated patients and familiarity with sedatives and tranquilizers.
• Ability to describe the steps required for and assist with CPR.
• Knowledge of diagnostic imaging in a veterinary setting, particularly small animal radiography.
• Excellent understanding of medical terminology and veterinary pharmacology.
• Ability to complete basic tasks and procedural skills independently and conduct more advanced tasks under supervision.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to work effectively on a diverse clinical and administrative team.
• Motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a professional attitude.
• Ability to provide excellent service to internal and external customers.
• Desire to teach and share knowledge with colleagues and students, and commitment to ongoing professional development, continuing education, and maintaining credentials and certifications.

Responsibilities

• Provide diagnostic imaging ordered by clinicians, supporting prompt, high-quality patient care.
• Collaborate with colleagues, faculty, house officers, and students to manage a high-volume clinical workflow without direct supervisory oversight.
• Provide patient care consistent with hospital standards for minimizing fear, anxiety, stress, and pain.
• Administer IV sedation safely and monitor sedated patients throughout procedures.
• Position and restrain patients calmly and compassionately using Fear Free techniques.
• Work with clinicians to perform specialty examinations.
• Work independently or as part of a team efficiently and professionally.
• Follow patient-safety and departmental protocols.
• Communicate with internal customers about education, imaging options, and results.
• Support and provide coverage across imaging modalities as needed; cross-train in multiple modalities.
• Perform technical tasks with supervision once trained.
• Maintain IACUC and RECOVER certifications as needed.
• Teach veterinary students diagnostic-imaging skills in daily instruction and organized labs.
• Provide clinical instruction in basic procedures to veterinary students, interns, residents, and student technicians during imaging rotations.
• Train, orient, and mentor new veterinary technicians in service responsibilities.
• Engage students to support a successful educational experience in the department.
• Clean and stock supplies and equipment throughout diagnostic imaging areas.
• Maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
• Maintain treatment areas, request improvements or work orders, and schedule service as needed.
• Provide coverage for other shifts and modalities as needed.
• Participate in departmental and hospital-wide initiatives as required.
• Assist faculty and house officers with ongoing research projects.
