Choice Hotels, one of the world’s largest lodging franchisors, has an exciting opportunity for a Software Engineer 1 within our Guest and Loyalty Domain. This team drives the systems powering our loyalty program and guest engagement data. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 1–2 years of Java (v1.8+) development experience with Spring (REST, MVC, Security).
  • Hands-on experience with AWS or other cloud environments.
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Familiarity with REST API design and consumption patterns
  • Source control proficiency – Bitbucket / Git workflows, branching strategies, and merge conflict resolution
  • Comfort using modern Java IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA or Visual Studio Code, and build tools such as Maven or Gradle
  • Understanding of secure coding practices and fundamentals of application security
  • Strong debugging habits and experience working with logs and monitoring tools
  • SQL/relational database fundamentals
  • Good verbal, written, and listening communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and demeanor
  • A curious, growth-oriented mindset and an eagerness to explore tools like Copilot, Claude, or other AI-powered developer assistants

Responsibilities

  • Analyze user stories and develop secure, maintainable Java code with Spring frameworks.
  • Use agentic AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude) to improve productivity and code quality.
  • Contribute to design discussions, peer code reviews, and integration testing efforts.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines and cloud-based deployments (AWS).
  • Assist with monitoring and debugging production systems using tools like Prometheus and OpenSearch.
  • Partner closely with QA for validation and test planning.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to support production systems.
  • Stay current on new technologies, frameworks, and software development best practices.
