About The Position

Requirements

• At least two years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
• Registered Nurse license to practice in Texas, in good standing and without disciplinary action by the Board of Nursing.
• Documented clinical competency and professional accountability.
• Completed Texas Office of the Attorney General training and certification as a Pediatric and Adult Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner; alternatively, completed at least 80 hours of OAG-approved sexual assault training, enrolled in the UTMB Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Preceptor Program, and in the process of completing the clinical certification requirements.
• Maintain the educational, case-review, and documentation requirements for Pediatric and Adult SANE recertification every two years.
• Digital imaging training.
• Competency in point-of-care testing and related quality requirements.
• Ability to meet visual, hearing, speaking, and tactile demands needed to assess patients, read small print, observe injury details, and assess patient behavior.
• Ability to work in circumstances that may involve cramped or noisy areas, emotional distress, or exposure to communicable diseases.

• Emergency Room experience; preferred but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Maintain awareness of Office of the Attorney General of Texas requirements for SANE certification and recertification, and submit required paperwork before certification expires.
• Assess and identify actual and potential nursing care needs and provide comprehensive care to sexual assault patients.
• Conduct sexual assault medical forensic examinations and collect evidence competently.
• Follow the Texas Protocol for forensic evidence collection and stay informed about updates from the Texas Department of Safety Crime Laboratory concerning evidence collection and storage.
• Complete accurate, concise, and legible written, illustrated, photographic, and hospital-record documentation.
• Be prepared to conduct suspect patient examinations.
• Maintain the chain of custody and be prepared to testify in court, potentially as an expert witness.
• Provide compassionate, sensitive, individualized, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive nursing care.
• Advocate for patients and families, focusing on their rights and individual needs.
• Assess patient and family readiness to learn, provide appropriate teaching, and evaluate understanding of instructions.
• Maintain awareness of community resources for sexual assault patients.
• Function independently and as a supportive member of the Forensic Nursing Team.
• Identify learning needs of self and others and demonstrate accountability, compassion, integrity, and respect.
• Maintain a professional verbal and nonverbal demeanor.
• Participate in precepting new sexual assault nurse examiners and serve as a forensic resource for hospital staff.
• Serve as a liaison to community agencies and collaborate with law enforcement, protective services, the Resource & Crisis Center, the Child Advocacy Center, and the District Attorney’s Office.
• Participate in community education and collaborate with the Forensic Nursing Team Program Coordinator and medical director.
• Attend sexual assault training, conferences, and case reviews required for education and recertification, and pursue and share ongoing professional growth.
• Use sexual assault nursing research and quality improvement to enhance practice.
• Perform and report point-of-care testing.
• Maintain a clean and safe environment and use proper aseptic technique to prevent DNA cross-contamination between patients.
• Follow sexual assault-related policies and procedures, stay informed about relevant legislative updates, and understand standard prophylaxis medication orders.
• Adhere to departmental internal controls and perform other related duties as required.
