About The Position

The Philadelphia Sexual Assault Response Center’s (PSARC) team of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) provides treatment and evidence collection to adult victims of acute sexual assault in the clinical setting. The specially trained SANE can provide post-exposure prophylactic care and traumatic injury screening, as well as collect forensic photographs, rape kit swabbing, toxicologic sampling, and clinical forensic narrative development. SANEs are responsible for serving as professional fact witnesses in the court of law and are liable to subpoena for providing testimony on behalf of the clinical forensic examination. As an integral part of the collaborative interface of local victim care, SANEs are dispatched on a 24/7 basis to operate both within the PSARC center as well as in the community by responding to inpatient hospital settings as requested.

Requirements

  • Provide compassionate, non-judgmental care to reduce re-traumatization; explain procedures clearly and reassure survivors
  • Maintain strict privacy of patient records and follow legal confidentiality requirements
  • Quickly assess situations and make sound clinical and procedural decisions
  • Build trust and rapport in high-stress situations
  • Successfully completed at least a 40-hour didactic and clinical training course approved by the Philadelphia Sexual Assault Response Team, as well as a competency-based post-course preceptorship
  • Must have a current license to practice as a registered nurse (RN), nurse practitioner (CRNP), or physician assistant (PA) in the State of Pennsylvania

Nice To Haves

  • Within three years of hire, obtain board certification as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A)
  • One year of clinical experience in clinical forensic examination

Responsibilities

  • Take a minimum of two (2) on-call shifts (24 hours) per month.
  • Respond to the center within one hour of dispatch to the PSARC center or within two hours of dispatch to inpatient hospital settings within Philadelphia County.
  • Complete forensic examinations on adult and adolescent sexual assault victims per PA Department of Health and Philadelphia Sexual Assault Response Team standards.
  • Provide court testimony as requested per subpoena.
  • Attend staff meetings and competency review as scheduled.
  • Participate in the Quality Improvement program.
  • Participate in ongoing clinical research projects.
  • Participate in continuing education (15 contact hours per year of eligible continuing education) and skill review trainings.
  • Comply with PHMC credentialing requirements.
  • Maintain professional licensure and annual competencies.
  • Attain or be working toward attaining a SANE-A certification or a minimum of 300 practice hours from the Didactic & Skills lab (200 hours must be with an adult/adolescent population).
  • Acquire a minimum of forty-five (45) hours of continuing education specific to sexual assault clinical care every three (3) years.
