Biobanking Scientist I, T cell Therapy

Weill Cornell Medical College•New York, NY
•$70,200 - $83,200

About The Position

The Biobanking Scientist is responsible for laboratory activities involving biospecimen processing in support of novel T cell therapy translational research and development. The role assists with biobanking workflows and performs tissue and blood processing, sample preparation, tissue culturing, quality control, biospecimen storage and tracking, and preparation of tumor material for downstream molecular, histology, and functional assays. The position coordinates the acquisition, processing, annotation, and long-term storage of human specimens; prepares and characterizes tumor and immune-cell populations; supports patient-derived tumor models and personalized TCR discovery workflows; and maintains compliant biobanking records and procedures. The scientist also analyzes and presents experimental findings, trains laboratory personnel, and conducts work in accordance with laboratory, departmental, institutional, ethical, and regulatory policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of laboratory experience handling and processing tumor specimens for single-cell analyses, flow cytometry, functional experiments, and immune assays.
  • Highly collaborative, with the ability to multitask and work cross-functionally.
  • Strong organizational skills and close attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with molecular and cell biology techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate acquisition, processing, annotation, and long-term storage of human tumor specimens, blood, lymph nodes, and matched normal tissues for cell therapy and translational research studies.
  • Dissociate fresh tumor tissue using sterile mechanical and enzymatic methods to produce single-cell suspensions for immune profiling and cell manufacturing.
  • Isolate, process, and cryopreserve tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), tumor cells, and other primary cell populations while maximizing viability and recovery.
  • Establish and maintain biobanking workflows, including sample tracking, chain-of-custody documentation, inventory management, and compliance with institutional, regulatory, and quality standards.
  • Develop, optimize, and maintain patient-derived in vitro tumor models, including short-term cultures, organoids, tumor cell lines, spheroids, and autologous co-culture systems.
  • Prepare biospecimens for single-cell sequencing, TCR repertoire analysis, transcriptomics, spatial profiling, proteomics, and genomic analyses supporting personalized TCR discovery workflows.
  • Sort, enrich, and characterize immune and tumor populations using flow cytometry and magnetic bead-based technologies.
  • Perform quality control assays to assess tissue viability, cell recovery, sterility, and sample integrity.
  • Maintain laboratory records, electronic biobank databases, and standard operating procedures, ensuring compliance with biosafety, ethical, and regulatory requirements governing human biospecimens.
  • Analyze experimental results, prepare summaries, and present findings at laboratory and project team meetings.
  • Train laboratory personnel in tissue handling, biobanking procedures, aseptic techniques, and quality management practices.
  • Conduct experiments with integrity and ethics and in accordance with laboratory, department, and college policies and procedures.
