About The Position
The Public Works Inspector is a member of the City of Palm Springs Engineering Services Department. The position performs detailed inspections of public and private public works construction projects, ensures conformance with City standard specifications and safety standards, and carries out related technical tasks. The role includes dust-control oversight, field measurements, surveying, mathematical computations, construction documentation, and coordination with contractors and developers. The inspector may also respond to emergencies such as floods, oil spills, dust storms, road closures, and power outages. The position works in both office and field environments and travels between sites. Work may involve exposure to noise, dust, radiant energy, moving objects and vehicles, inclement weather, and slippery or uneven surfaces. It may require driving, walking, or standing for prolonged periods and light lifting and carrying. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Applicants must complete an application and supplemental questionnaire by the deadline. The selection process may include application and qualification reviews, written and practical exams, an oral panel exam, and a department interview. Successful completion of each stage is required to continue. The incumbent must complete a pre-employment background investigation, physical examination, and drug screen, and will be enrolled in the California DMV Pull Notice Program. City employees may be called upon to serve as disaster service workers in the event of a disaster.
Requirements
- Two years of increasingly responsible public works or engineering inspection experience; qualifying experience may be in the private or public sector.
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation, physical examination, and drug screen.
- Complete a City application and supplemental questionnaire by the closing date and time; experience must be demonstrated in the Work Experience section.
Nice To Haves
- Five years of field inspection experience.
- Inspection experience working for a public sector agency.
- Specialized training in public works or engineering inspection or a related field.
- American Construction Inspection Association certificate related to the position.
- Qualified Storm Water Pollution Practitioner (QSP) certificate.
Responsibilities
- Perform detailed inspections and dust-control oversight on private and public engineering projects, including accurate technical mathematical computations regarding findings.
- Obtain field measurements during inspections and prepare topographical surveys, sketches, and drawings for City project design.
- Inspect public and private public works construction projects, including projects involving State, Riverside County Flood Control, and utility agencies in the right-of-way, for conformance with City specifications and safety standards.
- Prepare and review detailed logs and reports of public works construction projects and complete and submit contract paperwork.
- Coordinate and schedule contractors' and developers' work to help public works projects run smoothly.
- Observe work in the field during progress and upon completion; confer with developers, contractors, superintendents, inspectors, and owners; and ensure safety procedures are followed.
- Perform surveying duties as required.
- Respond to emergencies, including floods, oil spills, dust storms, road closures, and power outages.
- Assist with special projects and perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
