About The Position

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be Animal Control Certified or pass a nationally recognized course within six months of employment.
• Ability to use a microscope to test feces for worms.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to use animal control equipment, including catch poles, leashes, humane traps, and tranquilizer darts.
• Familiarity with operating an incinerator.
• Understanding of Meriwether County and Georgia animal control ordinances.
• Ability to enforce animal control laws and work with law enforcement officers and agencies.
• Ability to speak and present court cases in Magistrate court.
• Ability to speak and write in English.
• Willingness and ability to respond as needed after hours.
• Ability to handle feral animals and perform regular and extended standing and walking, as well as bending, kneeling, crouching, and lifting or moving animals and objects up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors, including during inclement weather, and communicate with citizens about legal issues related to animal control.

Nice To Haves

• One year of domestic animal experience, preferably in an animal shelter or veterinarian’s office.

Responsibilities

• Capture and remove stray, uncontrolled, feral, or abused animals using catch poles, leashes, humane traps, or tranquilizer darts as necessary.
• Transport rabid, unclaimed, or severely injured animals for euthanasia.
• Examine animals for injuries or malnutrition and arrange necessary medical treatment onsite or at a veterinarian’s office.
• Administer medications and perform minor medical treatment on sick or injured shelter animals.
• Investigate reports of animal attacks or cruelty by interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, taking photographs, and writing reports.
• Issue warnings or citations for animal-related offenses, or contact the Sheriff’s office to report violations and request assistance with criminal investigations.
• Remove captured animals from animal control vehicles and place them in shelter kennels or other enclosures.
• Provide animals with food, water, and personal care; clean and maintain kennels and cages; and monitor food and water intake.
• Help educate the public about animal welfare, animal control laws, and regulations, and answer questions about animal control operations.
• Maintain a healthy, organized animal control facility and office through daily cleaning and organization.
• Assist the public with shelter animal adoptions.
• Present court cases in Magistrate court.
• Perform other related duties assigned by the Director of Animal Services or County Administrator.
