About The Position
This position is with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector, Targeting & Intelligence Division, Intelligence Unit, located in Santee, California. The Investigative Analyst (DOMEX) supports the management and analysis of complex digital document and media exploitation program data and reports and presents information for criminal and administrative proceedings, complex conspiracy investigations, and Border Patrol operations. Additional selections may be made for other organizational divisions or units at the listed duty location(s). The position is advertised at the GS-12 level, with a stated salary range of $102,246 to $132,923. The incumbent must be able to operate a government-owned vehicle and hold a valid, non-restricted driver's license. Training is required in vendor-provided software systems, DOMEX practices, digital forensic methods, CBP systems used to extract, exploit, and process devices and media, and the proper handling of seized property and evidence, including digital forensic evidence. Successful completion of required training may be a condition of employment. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and meet the stated residency requirement unless an exception applies. Pre-employment processes are conducted in English and may include a background investigation and drug testing. The position is covered by a bargaining unit represented by the National Border Patrol Council. New federal employees must serve a one-year probationary period; current or former federal employees may also be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
Requirements
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, including experience processing DOMEX-related data, reporting and presenting findings, and developing recommendations; navigating digital media systems and devices and storing data; performing records management duties on digital media; and analyzing large amounts of complex data from multiple digital media sources to further investigations.
- U.S. citizenship.
- For applicants not currently employed by CBP, physical residence in the United States or its protectorates for at least three of the last five years, unless an exception or waiver applies.
- Ability to operate a government-owned vehicle and a valid, non-restricted driver's license.
- Ability to attend and successfully complete required training, including training in vendor software, DOMEX practices, digital forensics, CBP device and media processing systems, and evidence handling.
- Meet applicable time-in-grade requirements by November 9, 2026, if applicable.
- Complete pre-employment processes, which may include a background investigation and drug testing.
- Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with Selective Service.
Responsibilities

- Formulate digital document and media exploitation (DOMEX)-related data-gathering and application techniques.
- Compile, review, and interpret DOMEX program data to identify and resolve discrepancies and issues.
- Brief executives, managers, and leadership on DOMEX program activities.
- Process DOMEX-related data, report and present findings, and develop recommendations.
- Navigate digital media systems and devices and store data.
- Perform records management duties for digital media.
