About The Position

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is seeking an environmental specialist for the Division of Environmental Response and Revitalization (DERR) at their Northeast District Office (NEDO) in Summit County. This role involves performing district site coordinator and RCRA inspector duties for assigned remedial action and hazardous waste handling facilities. The specialist will review, prepare, and implement various plans and reports related to site assessment and cleanup activities through Ohio’s Voluntary Action Program (VAP) or other state and federal cleanup programs. Key responsibilities include investigating complaints, assessing contaminated environmental or waste-related media, conducting compliance inspections, and determining the effectiveness of remedial remedies. The position also requires identifying potential threats to public health and the environment, escalating these impacts to division management, and developing strategies to assist responsible parties and hazardous waste facilities with non-compliance issues, including identifying necessary enforcement actions.

Requirements

  • 12 months experience as Environmental Specialist 1, 85861.
  • 4 years training or 4 years experience in position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology or hydrogeology and/or other comparable physical or health science field and/or mathematics which included responsibility for conducting compliance monitoring surveys and/or inspections/reviews or investigations, or review of permit applications relative to oil and gas well operations or injection, annular disposal and saltwater injection wells and enhanced recovery projects or coal mining, or solid/hazardous waste sites or industrial and municipal wastewater dischargers, or collecting, compiling and preparing various environmental assessments, evaluations, reports and related documents. Training and experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
  • Baccalaureate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science and/or urban and regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science fields, with training to be commensurate with duties to be assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Perform district site coordinator and RCRA inspector duties for assigned remedial action.
  • Review, prepare and implement work plans, sampling plans, reports, and technical memoranda associated with properties undergoing site assessment and cleanup activities through Ohio’s Voluntary Action Program (VAP) or other state and federal cleanup programs.
  • Investigate complaints, perform assessments of contaminated environmental or waste related media.
  • Conduct periodic inspections to verify compliance with existing permits, and determine the effectiveness of existing remedial remedies.
  • Identify the potential for threats to public health and the environment and act to elevate these potential impacts through division management.
  • Plan and develop strategies for assisting responsible parties and hazardous waste facilities with non-compliance issues and identify the need for necessary enforcement actions.
