About The Position
The North Carolina Department of Labor is hiring an Elevator Inspector for its Standards and Inspections Division. The position supports the Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau by inspecting and analyzing the condition and capabilities of devices covered by the Elevator Safety Act, Amusement Device Safety Act, and associated standards and codes, and reporting violations. This is a field-based teleworker position. Applicants must reside in Dare County or a surrounding county, or relocate within 30 days of hire. Inspectors must obtain Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) certification within one year of employment and must be certified before conducting independent elevator inspections. Candidates who are not already certified receive study time and two opportunities to take the examination; the department pays for two examination fees. Employees who do not pass after two attempts will be separated from the agency. A valid driver's license is required. Selected candidates must submit a certified 10-year driving record and pass a pre-employment drug test.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED and four years of experience in the construction, inspection, erection, or servicing of elevators and related equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must obtain QEI (Quality Elevator Inspector) certification within one year of employment; certification is required before conducting independent elevator inspections.
- Valid driver's license.
- Demonstrated ability to inspect equipment accurately and precisely, including equipment with intricate and complex systems.
- Working knowledge of elevator, escalator, and related-equipment construction and operation.
- Working knowledge of applicable state and national safety codes for elevators, escalators, related equipment, and amusement devices.
- Working knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to learn basic computer programs and use simple word-processing tools.
- Ability to sustain a high level of visual attention and mental concentration during inspections.
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather and in high-temperature enclosed spaces, restricted spaces, and potentially noisy environments.
- Ability to move objects weighing 50 pounds, walk long distances on uneven surfaces, ascend and descend ladders or steps, and perform inspection tasks involving bending, crawling, stooping, standing, lifting, and walking.
- Ability to perform daily activities that may be 50–100% non-stationary.
- Must meet the physical requirements listed on the ADA checklist, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must reside in Dare County or surrounding counties, or relocate within 30 days of hire.
- Selected candidate must submit a certified 10-year driving record and pass a pre-employment drug test.
