About The Position

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be at least 21 years old and able to meet criteria for certification as a Juvenile Supervision Officer through TJJD.
• Valid Texas driver's license with appropriate liability auto insurance coverage; employees who recently moved from another state must meet driver’s license requirements within 30 days.
• Must pass a non-disqualifying criminal history and sex offender registration background check.
• Ability to understand human behavioral patterns and use good judgment when dealing with troubled youth and their families.
• Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
• Basic computer knowledge and competence.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Physical ability to perform physical restraint techniques.
• Ability to perform the essential duties, with reasonable accommodations where applicable.

Nice To Haves

• One year of work experience with youth-oriented services or programs.

Responsibilities

• Maintain care, custody, and control of residents in accordance with established procedures and provide a safe living environment.
• Transport residents within and outside the facility as needed.
• Search incoming residents for prohibited items; conduct intakes and orient new residents.
• Supervise residents during recreation, manage students in class, and provide physical education and recreational activities.
• Restrain residents physically or mechanically when required.
• Maintain personal training hours and certification status, including 80 hours of approved training biannually to maintain JSO certification.
• Complete necessary paperwork, including the Meal Record and Evaluation.
• Assist with orienting newly employed and relief officers in detention duties.
• Prepare or set up meals, clean the kitchen as needed, and maintain accurate security counts of utensils at mealtimes.
• Provide clean linens weekly and clean clothes daily; launder clothes and linens.
• Conduct door and perimeter checks, maintain key control, monitor residents in their rooms through in-person audio and visual checks, and conduct room searches, pat-downs, and strip searches.
• Ensure facility cleanliness and sanitation; assign, prepare for, and oversee resident chores.
• Follow department policies, procedures, and practices; abide by the TJJD Code of Ethics; and protect confidential case information, files, and chronos.
