About The Position

Requirements

• Associate’s degree in Public Safety, Criminology, Nursing, Biological Sciences, or a related field; an equivalent combination of directly related work experience and education may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-per-year basis.
• At least six months of experience in the activities of a Medical Examiner or Coroner’s office, such as an internship.
• Valid Arizona driver’s license.

• Experience in a Medical Examiner or Coroner’s office.
• Background in forensic science, criminology, nursing, or a related field.

Responsibilities

• Collect on-site scene information and evidence, including examining decedents, taking photographs, securing physical evidence on or near the body, and noting other physical evidence relevant to the death.
• Interview people associated with the decedent to obtain pertinent past and present history; obtain and review medical histories and records; and prepare written investigation reports.
• Assist with preparation for and performance of autopsies and external examinations as needed, including taking X-rays and photographs, retrieving toxicology samples, weighing and measuring the body and organs, packaging toxicology and histology specimens, and occasionally assisting with autopsy evisceration as training permits.
• Coordinate with organ donor agencies to facilitate organ and tissue donation requests.
• Communicate and consult with law enforcement personnel, funeral homes, and other agencies to expedite case disposition.
• Log and track property and evidence and maintain the chain of custody.
• Attend training programs to maintain high standards and implement new investigative methods.
• Give sworn testimony in a deposition or before a court or other legal tribunal when required.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
