Child Life Assistant Jobs

The Child Life Assistant assists in implementing child life services by providing operational and therapeutic activity support to help meet the developmental and psychosocial needs of pediatric patients and families. The role supports Child Life Specialists by maintaining and facilitating developmentally appropriate activities under supervision. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; no prior work experience is required. Coursework in child development, psychology, education, or a related field and experience working with children, in healthcare environments, or in volunteer programs are preferred. The assistant helps maintain safe, clean, and appropriately supplied playroom environments; supports age-appropriate therapeutic and recreational activities; and provides activity support for patients on isolation or bed rest as arranged with clinical staff. The role also prepares materials and environments for interventions and group programming, supports special events and community groups, assists with volunteer coordination, and observes patient responses to share relevant information with Child Life Specialists. The position requires effective communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills; proficiency with computers and web-based applications; and the ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professional relationships. The employee must be able to work a flexible schedule, including possible 24/7, weekend, holiday, and on-call availability, and travel throughout and between facilities. This is a sedentary role involving occasional lifting or moving of up to 10 pounds and may involve walking or standing briefly. The healthcare environment may involve occupational risk of exposure to hazardous medications or waste. The role does not ordinarily involve exposure to blood, body fluid, or tissue, emergency care, or first aid, and there is no occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.
