Youth Mentor - Before / After School Enrichment
About The Position
The Youth Mentor supports before- and after-school enrichment for the 2026–2027 school year. The role involves creating engaging, child-centered learning experiences, supporting children’s development and self-esteem, and maintaining a safe, organized program environment. The specific childcare site will be determined during the interview. The position also includes communicating with parents and guardians about children’s experiences and progress, maintaining program records and required paperwork, attending team-planning meetings, and helping develop donors and volunteers through the YMCA Annual Campaign. The YMCA describes the role as part of a supportive team and a nonprofit organization working to strengthen the community.
Requirements
- Degree from an accredited college or university in an education- or human services-related field.
- At least two years of verified childcare experience (2,500 hours).
- Passion for working with children in a fun, diverse environment.
- Ability to pass all relevant clearances and keep trainings up to date.
Responsibilities
- Find engaging ways to help children learn while maintaining environments that build their self-esteem.
- Plan and implement curriculum, ensuring classroom experiences are child-centered and developmentally appropriate.
- Use positive reinforcement for behavioral management.
- Conduct and record weekly child observations, including observations related to behavioral concerns or development that may require early intervention with parents or guardians.
- Communicate effectively and promptly with parents and guardians about children’s program experiences and progress, verbally and in writing, while maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity.
- Maintain accurate daily attendance records, emergency contact binders, allergy reports, timesheets, incident reports, weekly reports, and child observation reports.
- Keep centers supplied with quality learning materials and organize materials in labeled containers associated with appropriate learning centers.
- Attend monthly team-planning meetings or additional meetings as needed.
- Actively campaign for the Annual Campaign and work to develop donors and volunteers.
