Wind & Site Engineer (m/f/d)

Nordex Group•Happy Valley, IA

About The Position

The Wind and Site Engineer supports Nordex’s North American sales team by evaluating wind resources, recommending suitable turbine models, determining annual energy production (AEP), and preparing site assessment reports for prospective wind energy projects. The role contributes to project layout optimization, bid competitiveness, and lower energy costs through site and resource analysis. The engineer evaluates meteorological conditions and turbine suitability, analyzes data from meteorological towers, SoDARs, and LiDARs, develops wind flow models, and assesses energy production, losses, uncertainties, and site-specific conditions. The position also supports customer and sales activities through project analyses, site visits, customer meetings, environmental and GIS analyses, meteorological campaign design, and basic balance-of-plant evaluations. The role involves multiple concurrent projects, tight deadlines, and a commitment to safety.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in the wind energy industry, preferably in wind resource assessment or energy yield analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of boundary layer meteorology, wind turbine mechanical loads, meteorological instrumentation, and statistical uncertainty analysis.
  • Proficiency with WindPRO, WAsP, OpenWind, QGIS, Microsoft Office, and wind resource analysis tools.
  • Experience with wind farm layout optimization and meteorological data analysis.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under tight deadlines, and collaborate across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong customer-facing communication and presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% as required.
  • Full valid driver’s license and ability to be insured under the company’s auto insurance policy; driving is an essential job function and periodic driver’s abstract checks apply.

  • Working knowledge of IEC 61400 standards.
  • Experience with CFD wind modeling, MATLAB, Visual Basic programming, SQL, Access databases, or GIS platforms such as ArcGIS, Global Mapper, or QGIS.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on meteorological conditions and turbine suitability for prospective wind projects.
  • Perform wind resource assessments using WindPRO, WAsP, and other industry-standard modeling tools.
  • Process and analyze meteorological data from met towers, SoDARs, and LiDARs, including data cleaning, long-term MCP analysis, and turbulence assessments.
  • Develop wind flow models and perform AEP analyses, including analyses of losses, uncertainties, and site-specific environmental conditions.
  • Evaluate extreme wind conditions, turbulence intensity, fatigue loads, flow inclination, temperature, and air density impacts on turbine performance.
  • Develop and recommend curtailment strategies when site conditions require mitigation of turbulence or fatigue loading.
  • Prepare Site Assessment Reports to support sales and service sales activities.
  • Collaborate with Sales Managers to optimize project layouts and maximize AEP.
  • Support customers through project analyses, site visits, customer meetings, shadow flicker studies, sound assessments, GIS analysis, meteorological campaign design, and basic BOP evaluations.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality deliverables.
  • Follow safety protocols and company policies, identify and mitigate hazards, use applicable safety equipment, and communicate to help maintain a safe working environment.
