Design Engineer (m/f/d)

Your mission nuwacom

About The Position

nuwacom is a European AI platform that connects company knowledge, chat, meeting notes, agents, apps, and workflows while keeping companies in control of their data and access permissions. The Design Engineer is part of the Design team and focuses primarily on coding at the intersection of Product Design, the design system, and Engineering. The role brings new features into production quickly and with design precision. It translates concepts and prototypes into production-ready interfaces using React and TypeScript, applying existing components, tokens, and interaction patterns. The Design Engineer also reviews and improves UI quality during development, prototypes and refines concepts in collaboration with Product Design, and uses AI development tools in a spec-driven workflow. Responsiveness, accessibility, and performance are part of the role’s quality standards. The position offers direct influence over new features and product quality, close collaboration between Design, Product, and Engineering, and the opportunity to shape everyday AI-assisted development practices.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional frontend development experience with a clear UI focus.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing and shipping high-quality user interfaces; backend-only experience or frontend experience without demonstrated UI expertise is not a fit.
  • Strong knowledge of React, TypeScript, and modern CSS.
  • Experience with Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui or comparable component libraries.
  • Practical experience with automated testing using Vitest and Playwright, including appropriate unit, integration, and end-to-end tests for components and key user flows.
  • A keen eye for UI quality, including hierarchy, spacing, typography, and interactions, and the ability to improve these details independently.
  • Experience applying design-system components and tokens consistently and ensuring their use in AI-assisted development workflows.
  • A proven, purposeful AI development workflow and ability to explain how requirements are provided, results evaluated, and generated output refined into production-ready code.
  • Ability to work autonomously with incomplete requirements, clarify open questions, and make pragmatic decisions.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced startup.
  • Fluent English for collaboration within an international team.

Nice To Haves

  • UX and interaction design experience to help develop user flows and interaction concepts with Product Design.
  • Experience with spec-driven development.
  • Experience with Storybook.
  • Experience with visual regression testing.

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship production-ready user interfaces using React and TypeScript.
  • Use existing design-system components, tokens, and interaction patterns to move features through to release.
  • Review features during development, identify inconsistencies in layout, typography, and interaction, and fix them directly or with the responsible developers.
  • Build functional prototypes with Product Design, assess technical feasibility, and refine user flows and UX/UI details in the implementation.
  • Use AI tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Lovable in daily development, guiding implementation with clear requirements, design-system rules, and acceptance criteria.
  • Independently review and refine AI-generated code.
  • Ensure AI-generated interfaces meet design-system standards and coordinate necessary design-system extensions with Design Engineering.
  • Maintain responsiveness, accessibility, and performance as part of UI quality.

Benefits

  • Direct influence on new features and product quality.
  • Close collaboration and short communication lines between Design, Product, and Engineering.
  • Opportunity to actively shape AI-assisted work practices.
  • Role on the Design team with a clear engineering focus, spending more time in code than in Figma.
  • Work with an experienced founding team.
