UX/UI Engineer

SAIC•Alexandria, VA

About The Position

SAIC is seeking a UX/UI Engineer to support Joint Engineering and Test Enterprise Portal (JETEP) software development activities, deploying tools, capabilities, and content. The role focuses primarily on UI/UX design and collaboration with requirements, development, and testing teams, while also contributing production frontend code using React and TypeScript. The engineer will work within the existing codebase to implement features, improve shared components, and resolve UI issues as priorities require. The role involves translating user needs, business rules, and UI requirements into practical designs; creating user flows, wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes in Figma; and designing new experiences while evaluating and improving existing interfaces. The engineer will document expected interface behavior, maintain consistent design patterns aligned with MUI and the application design system, and collaborate with developers to balance usability, technical feasibility, and delivery priorities. The UX/UI Engineer will partner with requirements analysts, stakeholders, developers, and testers to clarify interactions, define acceptance criteria and test scenarios, conduct design reviews and usability evaluations, and assess implemented interfaces against requirements and designs. The role also includes implementing and troubleshooting React/TypeScript components and UI features, integrating backend APIs, following established coding and review practices, and designing accessible interfaces that meet applicable Section 508 requirements and project accessibility standards. Participation in Agile planning, refinement, demonstrations, and reviews is expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and at least five years of experience; master's degree and at least three years of experience; or PhD and zero years of related experience.
  • Active Secret clearance.
  • Proficiency in Figma for wireframes, interface design, interactive prototypes, and developer handoff.
  • Hands-on experience delivering production web application features using React and TypeScript, including components, hooks, state management, forms, and API integration.
  • Strong working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, responsive layouts, and component-based UI development.
  • Experience designing enterprise applications with complex workflows, forms, tables, search, or dashboards, and ability to create new designs and improve existing interfaces.
  • Practical experience applying accessibility requirements in design and code, including semantic markup, keyboard interaction, focus management, form labeling, and color contrast.
  • Experience collaborating with requirements analysts and testers to clarify behavior, define acceptance criteria, and evaluate implemented interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of Git, branching, and collaborative code review workflows.
  • Ability to explain design decisions to technical and nontechnical audiences, manage competing priorities, and work independently within a cross-functional Agile team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Material UI (MUI), including theming, reusable components, and data grids.
  • Experience with the GitLab merge request process, including creating and reviewing merge requests, addressing feedback, resolving merge conflicts, and interpreting pipeline results.
  • Experience with Jira and documenting design decisions and acceptance criteria in work items.
  • Experience with Jest and React Testing Library, and collaboration on automated UI and accessibility testing.
  • Experience designing dashboards, chart interactions, and drilldowns; familiarity with Chart.js is a plus.
  • Experience supporting government or other access-controlled enterprise applications.

Responsibilities

  • Translate user needs, business rules, and UI requirements into practical designs in collaboration with requirements analysts, stakeholders, and developers.
  • Identify gaps, clarify interactions, and help define measurable acceptance criteria.
  • Create user flows, wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes in Figma.
  • Design new experiences and evaluate and improve existing application interfaces.
  • Document expected behavior, including validation, loading and empty states, error handling, permission-dependent behavior, keyboard navigation, and responsive layouts.
  • Maintain consistent design patterns and reusable components aligned with MUI and the application design system.
  • Collaborate with developers to balance usability, technical feasibility, and delivery priorities.
  • Conduct design reviews, workflow walkthroughs, and usability evaluations; explain design decisions and incorporate stakeholder and user feedback.
  • Partner with the testing team to define UI acceptance test scenarios and expected results.
  • Walk testers through workflows, identify interaction and accessibility edge cases, and review findings against requirements and designs.
  • Implement and troubleshoot React/TypeScript components and UI features in the existing application.
  • Integrate with backend APIs and follow established coding, testing, and code review practices.
  • Design and develop accessible interfaces that meet applicable Section 508 requirements and project accessibility standards.
  • Support accessibility evaluation and remediation with the testing team.
  • Participate in Agile planning, refinement, demonstrations, and reviews.
  • Communicate design progress, dependencies, and delivery risks across the team.
