Utility Locator (Iron Mountain, MI)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator to locate underground utilities and help protect utility infrastructure. The company has provided utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging services since 2001, operates 24/7/365, and works on projects nationwide. This is a full-time employee position serving the Iron Mountain, Michigan area. The role offers independence in an assigned work area, with operational support and modern locating technology. The listed pay range is $18.00–$30.00 per hour, and employees are paid from door to door. The successful candidate is self-motivated and able to work independently, communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and coworkers, and maintain company equipment and vehicles. The role requires working in all weather conditions, participating in an on-call rotation, and being willing to work overtime and flexible schedules.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Accurately mark utilities using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.
