Utility Locator (Detroit, MI)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator in Detroit, Michigan. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and performs nationwide utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects. This role involves locating underground utilities in compliance with 811 dig laws, using advanced locating technology and multiple methods, and producing accurate field documentation. The position is full-time and employee-based, with a stated pay range of $20.00–$30.00 per hour. The successful candidate will work independently in an assigned territory, maintain company equipment and vehicles, communicate professionally with excavators, property owners, and team members, and participate in an on-call rotation. Work may involve all weather conditions, overtime, flexible schedules, and travel.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate with excavators, property owners, and team members.
- Work independently in an assigned work area and travel for projects.
