Utility Locator (Detroit, MI)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator to locate underground utilities in Detroit, Michigan. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and performs nationwide utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects. This is a full-time employee position for a self-motivated professional who can work independently and manage an assigned territory. The role involves working in all weather conditions, maintaining company equipment and vehicles, communicating with excavators, property owners, and team members, and participating in an on-call rotation. Travel and overtime may be required.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of utility locating experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and without supervision.
- Accuracy- and safety-minded approach.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Experience using electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.
