Utility Locator (Sterling Heights, MI)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and works nationwide on utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects. This professional role is suited to self-motivated locators who can work independently and manage an assigned territory. The position requires working in all weather conditions, maintaining company equipment and vehicles, and communicating effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members. The role includes participation in an on-call rotation and may involve travel and overtime. Pay is $20.00–$30.00 per hour, and employees are paid door to door.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locate practices.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Willingness to travel.
Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Work in all weather conditions.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate with excavators, property owners, and team members.
