The UNC Upward Bound Program is a Federal TRiO Program designed to assist Scholars in developing the necessary skills and motivation to pursue and succeed in college, ultimately attaining a Bachelor’s Degree. Each summer, the program hosts a comprehensive, 6-week academy offering academic enrichment, professional development, and personal growth opportunities. Scholars participate in courses such as Math, Science, English, Spanish, and History. Academic Instructors are tasked with teaching rising sophomores and juniors from Chatham, Durham, and Lee counties, focusing on special topics within core subjects including Math, English (Rhetoric and Composition), Science, History, and Spanish. This approach provides Scholars with a contextualized exploration of the subject matter while imparting essential skills for future high school success. Academic Instructors collaborate closely with the Upward Bound Academic Advisor and Assistant Director to identify best practices and develop curriculum tailored to Scholars’ needs. They are part of a team of CHEOP/Upward Bound staff, including the College Prep Coach and Wellness Coach, all working together to ensure the success of the Summer Academy.
