About The Position

The Harvey Mudd College Upward Bound Program is a federally funded initiative designed to assist low-income, potential first-generation college students in developing the necessary skills and motivation to complete secondary education and successfully enter and succeed in postsecondary education. High school students from the East San Gabriel Valley participate in the program during both the academic year and the summer. During the academic year, students attend weekly tutorials at their high school and monthly programs on the Harvey Mudd College Campus. In the summer, students attend a summer program at HMC, where a staff of instructors and tutors, led by a coordinator, provides instruction and supervision. The summer program includes one week of staff training and six weeks of instruction.

Requirements

  • Current Undergrad
  • Academic success at the four-year college or university college level
  • A Valid Driver’s License (if assigned driving responsibilities)
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and learning
  • Ability to tutor across the curriculum
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise high school students in small and large group settings
  • Demonstrated understanding of program objectives and philosophy
  • Personal/professional experience with low-income, potential first-generation college bound youth
  • Knowledge of the psychological, behavioral, and educational issues affecting the learning potential of low-income, potential first-generation college bound youth
  • Ability to work exclusively on campus for an initial 30-calendar-day period
  • Ability to work standard working hours generally from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, though these hours may vary depending on departmental and College needs
  • Ability to regularly sit, stand, use hands and fingers and talk or hear
  • Ability to occasionally reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus

Responsibilities

  • Help in the supervision of students during class.
  • Participate in all aspects of project activities: class and study hours, academic enrichment activities and community building time.
  • Assist and co-facilitate class instruction each day which includes assessment, supervision and curriculum development.
  • Fully integrate yourself into the classroom as a teaching partner who participates in teaching, planning, assessing, and study hall supervision.
  • Assist in the classroom instruction each day of the six-week project.
  • Help design and implement lesson plans that emphasize cooperative and independent learning, and college level study skills (writing, reading, note taking, and test preparation).
  • Contribute to the design of course syllabus and assignments.
  • Complete the FESP (including both formal and informal assessments in classroom and study hall) in a timely manner, distributing updates to students during the summer and a final version to parents on the last day of the program.
  • Participate in a one week of paid teaching and staff training; this training period is a rigorous program that includes a demanding learning schedule (designed to simulate the students’ summer experience) and reading and writing assignments.
  • Enhance the ability of students to complete academic assignments in preparation for a four-year college education in the field assigned to the instruction.
  • Teach appropriate technical skills (grammar, calculation skills, lab skills, etc.).
  • Design independent learning activities that challenge students to improve their reading, writing, mathematical, or scientific skills (as appropriate to the discipline) and prepare for college level work.
  • Supervise and tutor students during the day in numerous scenarios.
  • Work with other professional staff members and college tutors during the project and cooperate with them on all aspects of the summer program, both formally (through daily staff meetings) and informally.
  • Participate fully in supervision.
  • Participate fully in college, career, and personal counseling components of the program.
  • Participate fully in all community sessions, recreational activities, and cultural enrichment activities.
  • Drive students to and from activities, as necessary.
  • Live residentially and supervise students during the residential component (only for residential sites).
  • Participate in a site specific parent sessions during Orientation Week.
  • Perform curriculum development, classroom instruction, assessment and supervision, community building activities and daily staff meetings during Summer Programming.
