About The Position

The Harvey Mudd College Upward Bound Program is a federally funded initiative designed to equip low-income, potential first-generation college students with the necessary skills and motivation to complete secondary education and successfully pursue postsecondary education. High school students from the East San Gabriel Valley engage with the program during both the academic year and summer. During the academic year, students attend weekly tutorials at their high school and participate in monthly programs on the Harvey Mudd College Campus. The summer component involves students attending a dedicated summer program at HMC, where a team of instructors and tutors, led by a coordinator, provides instruction and supervision. This includes one week of staff training followed by six weeks of instruction.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree (minimum)
  • A minimum of one-year formal teaching experience or significant classroom experience in an Upward Bound Project.
  • A Valid, Driver’s License (if assigned driving responsibilities)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the desired subject
  • Personal/ professional experience working with low-income, potential first-generation college bound youth
  • Knowledge of the psychological, behavioral, and educational issues affecting the learning potential of low-income, potential first-generation college bound youth
  • Possession of personal characteristics appropriate for instruction

  • Master’s degree and/or teaching credential preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Help in the supervision of students during class and program activities.
  • Participate in all aspects of project activities: class and study hours, academic enrichment activities, community building time and recreation.
  • Teach at most 2 rotations each day and lead assessment and curriculum development.
  • Provide instruction each day of the six-week project.
  • Design lesson plans and assessment instruments relevant to achieving designated performance goals and objectives.
  • Complete the FESP (including both formal and informal assessments in classroom and study hall) in a timely manner, distributing updates to students during the summer and a final version to parents on the last day of the program.
  • Participate in a one week of paid teaching and staff training, which is a rigorous program including a demanding learning schedule and reading and writing assignments.
  • Enhance the ability of students to complete academic assignments in preparation for a four-year college education in the field assigned to the instruction.
  • Teach college preparatory reading, writing, problem solving, and study skills.
  • Teach appropriate technical skills (grammar, calculation skills, lab skills, etc.).
  • Design independent learning activities that challenge students to improve their reading, writing, mathematical, or scientific skills (as appropriate to the discipline) and prepare for college level work, including daily reading and writing assignments.
  • Incorporate cooperative learning, journal writing, peer editing and writing groups, and portfolios into instruction and lesson plans as appropriate to the course goals and assigned discipline.
  • Lead class discussions that require all students to participate and demonstrate preparation for class and engagement with the course assignments and concepts.
  • Fully integrate a college student tutor into the classroom who participates in teaching, planning, assessment, and study hall supervision.
  • Incorporate discussion and development of thinking, study, and/or research skills into the curriculum each day.
  • Complete a five-week syllabus by designated deadlines and submit any revisions to the weekly components of that syllabus to the site coordinator in advance of distribution to students.
  • Work with other professional staff members and college tutors during the project and cooperate with them on all aspects of the program, both formally (through daily staff meetings) and informally.
  • Participate fully in supervision.
  • Participate fully in college, career, and personal counseling components of the program.
  • Participate fully in all community sessions, recreational activities, and cultural enrichment activities.
  • Drive students to and from activities, as necessary.
  • Perform classroom instruction, student recreation and community activities, and continued staff training sessions during Orientation Week.
  • Participate in site specific parent sessions.
  • Perform curriculum development, classroom instruction, assessment and supervision, community building activities and daily staff meetings during Summer Programming.
