Summer Program Instructor Upward Bound

About The Position

Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families; high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree; and low-income, first-generation military veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Upward Bound is seeking instructors to teach Math, English, Science, and Foreign Language at the high school or college level for the six (6) week summer program. The program provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.

Requirements

  • Ability to work effectively with students with diverse needs
  • Demonstrates engaged learning techniques, enthusiasm, and ability to motivate students
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Possesses commitment to teaching culturally diverse students
  • Ability to guide students toward excellence
  • Proficient communication skills
  • Pass background test
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in the field they are teaching/Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum two year’s teaching experience

Nice To Haves

  • Secondary teaching certification in a related field (math, science, English, and foreign language) a plus
  • Previous experience working with underrepresented students preferred

Responsibilities

  • Establish key objectives for classes
  • Implement curriculum for courses in the upward bound program that are in alignment with state and local curriculum requirements and areas of focus
  • Develop a syllabus for the 6-week summer program that outlines topics that will be explored and lists due dates for assignments and exams
  • Create lesson plans, that describe how the information will be presented
  • Participate as a chaperone at educational events
  • Give lectures and organize activities to present material and deepen understanding of coursework
  • Provide academic feedback and counseling to participants and parents
  • Writes, administers, and grades examinations that test students’ knowledge
  • Record students’ attendance and grades
  • Work closely with UB staff to identify students in need of tutoring and provide materials for tutoring as needed
