About The Position

The Upward Bound (UB) Program provides fundamental support to participants preparing for college entrance. The program offers opportunities for students to improve their pre-college performance and succeed in higher education. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families, students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree, and low-income, first-generation military veterans preparing for postsecondary education. The program’s goal is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of assigned academic subject area(s).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with high school students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to assist with individual and group tutoring sessions.
  • Basic organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with program staff.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for program participants.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Must be a Kentucky State University student with sophomore status or above.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.8 and a 3.0 GPA in the subject being tutored.
  • Familiarity with and interest in working with economically and educationally disadvantaged youth.

  • Preference will be given to individuals who have overcome similar socioeconomic disadvantages.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison between staff and participants.
  • Monitor the academic progress, attendance, and participation of Upward Bound students during the six-week summer program.
  • Participate in program activities alongside Upward Bound students.
  • Conduct individual and group instructional meetings.
  • Attend and participate in training sessions.
  • Assist in chaperoning cultural, educational, and recreational trips.
  • Make referrals to the UB Program Coordinator or Director for students requiring additional attention.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the instructor and Upward Bound staff.
