The Truck Scale Operator (TSO) weighs and grades incoming scrap loads, operates inbound and outbound scales, directs customers to appropriate unloading areas, and facilitates payment for inbound material while complying with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. The role may communicate material pricing to production crews and customers. It requires knowledge of metals identification and grading according to ISRI specifications, along with a commitment to exceptional customer service. The position operates within well-defined parameters and aims to achieve high-quality, safe, effective, and efficient performance. The TSO works directly with the Facilities & Operations Supervisor or Terminal Operations Manager, the Commercial department, customers, and operations production employees. Daily communication may be face-to-face, electronic, or by radio. The role has no supervisory responsibilities and does not require travel. The position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions and to hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt in a scrap-yard environment. Required protective equipment includes safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, face shields, and other personal protective equipment as needed. Workload and pressure may be substantial during peak periods; deadlines require adaptability, and workflow disruptions or irregular schedules occur intermittently. Extra hours may be required, including weekends, weekdays, and holidays. Physical demands include occasionally lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds, crouching or bending, climbing vertical steps, and reaching overhead; frequently reaching at arm’s length and walking on uneven ground; and continually sitting or standing and communicating through speech and hearing. Close-detail visual acuity and mental dexterity, including independent work, attention to detail, and continuous awareness, are also needed.
