About The Position

Under immediate supervision, the Tree Artisan Helper performs routine and progressively more difficult tasks involved in the general care of trees and shrubs. Work includes pruning, trimming, evaluating, and grooming trees and shrubs; assisting with tree removal; and handling branches and related materials for disposal. The position may operate trucks or other automotive equipment used in forestry or landscape work and follows departmental safety procedures, including use of designated personal protective equipment. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.

Work is performed outdoors with exposure to all seasonal weather conditions. It involves frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, lifting branches and tools or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds, and exposure to heights. Candidates considered for placement may be subject to a criminal background investigation based on the position's requirements. Specific duties may vary by position, and employees may be required to perform other job-related tasks.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Knowledge of methods used in the general care of trees and shrubs.
• Skill in using and handling work-related tools.
• Physical strength, agility, and endurance.
• Ability to work in high, open places.
• Ability to interact tactfully and effectively with superiors, co-workers, and others.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform work involving frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, lifting branches and tools or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds, and exposure to heights.

• One year of experience caring for and cultivating trees and shrubs.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and less-skilled tasks involved in pruning, trimming, and evaluating trees and shrubs.
• Remove broken branches or limbs.
• Trim branches to promote proper shape and growth.
• Assist in cutting down trees.
• Saw tree branches into smaller pieces of wood.
• Lift and carry tree branches to appropriate vehicles for disposal.
• Perform routine tree and park grooming work.
• Operate trucks or other automotive equipment used in forestry or landscape work, as required.
• Follow departmental safety procedures, including use of designated personal protective equipment.
• Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
