The Transporter has direct patient contact and frequent interaction with nurses, radiology technicians, desk staff, door attendants, and others. The role transports patients, visitors, and patient-related items safely and efficiently, and provides verbal handoff communication to the appropriate care team member, including confirmation of patient identification. The Transporter works independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision, uses a smartphone, and may manage transport requests through a computer or by telephone with General Service dispatch. Duties also include operating motorized patient transport equipment, disinfecting equipment after use, requesting maintenance, and returning wheelchairs to designated locations. The position involves standing or walking 10–12 miles per 8-hour shift and frequently pushing or pulling patients weighing up to 200 pounds, with occasional assistance for patients weighing up to or exceeding 350 pounds. Transporters support patients who require oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs, or other equipment; follow isolation precautions and PPE requirements; and confirm precautions using Epic information and with a care team member. With assistance or direction from medical care team members, they perform lateral slide transfers using slider boards and sheets and occasionally assist with ceiling lift slings. Transporters assist patients and visitors, accompany critical-care patients when a nurse or respiratory therapist is required, and monitor patients during transport when care staff are not accompanying them. They remain alert to changes in patient condition that may require an emergency call. Hours may include days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekends, with rotating days off. Employees may need to attend meetings outside their normal schedule or help train new employees. At least 80 hours of on-the-job training is required to perform basic job functions.
