The Transporter has direct patient contact and frequent interactions with nurses, radiology technicians, desk staff, door attendants, and other personnel. The role transports patients, visitors, and patient-related items safely and efficiently, while providing detailed verbal handoff communication to the appropriate care team member and confirming patient identification. The Transporter works independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision, uses a smartphone, and may manage transport requests by computer or telephone through General Service dispatch. The position operates motorized patient transport equipment, disinfects equipment after each use, requests maintenance as needed, and returns wheelchairs to designated storage locations. Transporters carry patients who use oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs, or other special equipment; follow isolation precautions and PPE requirements; and confirm precautions using Epic information and a care team member. With direction or assistance from medical care team members, they perform lateral slide transfers using slider boards and sheets and occasionally assist with ceiling-lift slings. They may transport critical care patients accompanied by a nurse or respiratory therapist, or monitor a patient's condition during transport when care staff are not accompanying the patient, recognizing changes that may require an emergency call. The role requires standing and/or walking 10–12 miles per 8-hour shift, frequently pushing or pulling patients weighing up to 200 pounds, and occasionally handling patients weighing up to or exceeding 350 pounds. Work hours may include days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays, with rotating days off. Staff may attend meetings outside their normal schedule and assist in training new employees. At least 80 hours of on-the-job training is required to perform basic job functions.
