The Waste Management Fleet Operational Management Trainee (FOMT) program is a 12-month course designed to develop individuals for fleet manager roles. Fleet Managers oversee primary and secondary equipment and work to achieve market-based profitability by managing fleet and maintenance activities, cost control, management development, training, and safety standards. Candidates who complete the program must be willing to relocate within an assigned geographic area. Training includes extensive on-the-job field experience and some classroom training, and requires 10–14 months of travel during the training period. Travel costs are covered by WM. The training location will likely differ from the permanent placement, and WM offers relocation assistance. The role combines office work with frequent field assignments in plant and field environments. Fieldwork may involve exposure to weather and other non-office conditions, climbing onto and descending from collection and support equipment, and riding equipment for many consecutive hours. Trainees may periodically work non-traditional schedules, including 12-hour workdays, some weekends, and early start times. Travel may be by air or car. The targeted program start date is March 2027. Trainees complete the FOMT curriculum and required training while developing skills and working knowledge in fleet management, WM applications, equipment operation and maintenance, personnel management, financial and forecasting processes, safety, and fleet maintenance documentation. Successful completion is intended to prepare trainees for fleet manager roles.
